MANGAN, 31 Oct: The Sikkim Building and Other Construction Worker’s Welfare Board under Labour Department, Government of Sikkim organized an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis for the construction workers of 86 RCC GREF at Rangma Range near Chungthang, North Sikkim on Wednesday. Around 250 workers attended the programme.
The programme was attended by Dr, Uttam Pradhan [Project Director, Sikkim State Aids Control Society (SSACS), Gangtok] as the chief guest who briefed the gathering about the preventive and curative measures for these two diseases.
Joint Labour Commissioner, Labour Department, DS Kunwar informed the workers about all the prevailing Labour Laws which are enforced and implemented in Sikkim. He also urged the workers to register themselves and pay their monthly contributions in time in order to avail the facilities and other schemes which are being provided by the Sikkim Building and Other construction workers Welfare Board in a phased manner.
The mobile team of ICTC under (SSACS) also checked the HIV status of the workers. A cultural programme was also performed by local artists to entertain the gathering.
Also present were officers and staffs of 86 RCC GREF, BP Bhattarai, Deputy Labour commissioner, North, Arjun Kr, Sharma and Tashi Pintso Bhutia, (Inspectors). Later, on the same day a similar programme was organized for the workers of SEW & NEC companies under Teesta Urja Company in the presence of company officials and around 300 workers.
Another programme was also held at Singhik in North Sikkim for the workers of GREF, Abir Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd and Teesta Urja Company. A cheque of Rs. 4000 each was handed over to two workers for maternity assistance under BOCW Act 1996 as per the scheme under Sikkim BOCW Workers Welfare Board.
