GANGTOK, 25 Aug: Bioinformatics Centre, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology, Department of Science & Technology and Climate Change has started a month-long education programme on Bioinformatics at various schools and colleges around the State.
As per a press release, the programme started from Mangan Senior Secondary School on 19 August followed by Hee Gyathang Senior Secondary School, Passingdang High Secondary School, Dzongu and Phodong Senior Secondary School on 20, 21 and 22 August, respectively.
The Bioinformatics Education Programme (BEP) covers most of the schools of all four districts and few colleges of Sikkim. It is being organized with the support of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
Initiated by PT Euthenpa [Member Secretary, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology], the Bioinformatics Education Programme is taking place under the guidance and supervision of Dr. BC Basistha [Additional Director and Coordinator] with the support of KB Subba [Assistant Scientific Officer and Co-coordinator, Bioinformatics Sub-DISC, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology].
During the programmes, Laydong Lepcha [Information Officer, Bioinformatics Sub-DISC, Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology] gave presentations on the importance and recent developments in Bioinformatics in the world and its role in Biological Sciences for the Science students of Class XI, XII and students of Class X along with the Science teachers.
The main objective of this programme is to help students to understand the fundamentals of Bioinformatics and biological science and inspire them to take up science in their future studies, the release informs.
