Two killed in truck accident

Two persons were killed in a road mishap here at Makha Balak Bhir 10 mile in East Sikkim on the Dikchu-Singtam highway at around 10 pm on 29 September. A truck bearing registration No. SK04-D-0024 was plying from North Sikkim to Siliguri when the vehicle plunged about 1,000 feet of the road. The driver Mukesh Chettri [24 yrs] and the handy boy died on the spot.

CM scholarship ‘boon from heaven’ for Makha girl

MAKHA, 27 Feb:  Eleven-year-old, Khusboo Sharma who hails from Makha, 10th Mile, Patuk (Paksam Busty), East Sikkim has been selected under the Chief Minister’s Merit Scholarship Scheme 2012 placed in the 7th position and is all set for admission in Pinegrove School in Himachal Pradesh.  Khusboo is a student of Makha Secondary School and had stood first in her last examination of class V at Makha.
About 200 meritorious students were selected under the CM’s Merit Scholarship Scheme this year from a statewide written examination held for class-V students who will now be placed, on full scholarship at reputed schools outside and within the state.
Speaking on this opportunity, Khusboo Sharma shared “For me it’s like a boon from heaven! Though it would be tough to stay away from my parents I am looking ahead because that is what my family has taught me”.
Confessing that she was stunned when she first heard the news, Khusboo is happy that it has made her family proud. “I will give my best efforts and study with dedication at my new school”, said Khusboo.
She thanked her family, friends and teachers, for their support and contribution without which this would not have been possible, she added. She especially expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her teachers for their support in guiding her towards success.  
On the other hand the proud parents, Bhawani Sharma and Durga Sharma also expressed their gratitude to the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, Area MLA of Tumin-Lingee constituency, Ugen T Gyatso, teachers and all well-wishers for their support and contribution.    

Fire guts one of the oldest houses in Makha

MANGAN, 06 Feb: One wooden [ekra] house at Dhar Gaon at Makha was completely burned down in East Sikkim on Sunday.  Leela Maya Rai, the owner of the house had gone shopping at around 10 30 AM when a fire broke out in her house. Fortunately, none of the family members were in the house at the time and it was the neighbors who noticed smoke coming out of the house and alerted the other villagers. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
The villagers and youth along with police personnel from Makha Check Post reached the spot immediately and managed to save some of the belongings.
The house was one of the oldest in Makha, made completely out of wood and some concrete, it is learnt. Fire personnel from Singtam also rushed to the spot upon hearing the news but it was already too late when they reached. Even though, the fire personnel doused the fire completely, Ms Rai lost most of her belongings that included important documents, utensils, ornaments, cash Rs. 6500 and others in the fire.
The Tumin-Lingee MLA, Ugen T Gyatso Bhutia also visited the spot and handed over Rs. 20,000 to the victim and announced the reconstruction of the house under CMRHM. The victims were also provided with some utensils and clothes by the SDF party members.

NYK organises essay competition at Makha

MANGAN, 24 Jan:  NYK Gangtok in collaboration with RHI-SYS-TRE at Paksum Moonlight Sangh Patuk, East Sikkim organized an Essay Competition on 23 January on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose.
Ward Panchayat, Patuk, KB Chettri was present as the chief guest at the function which began with a welcome address by BB Chettri. The chief guest and president Moonlight Sangh, PK Chettri in their addresses spoke on the Netaji's contribution towards the nation and urged the coming generation to follow in his footsteps.
The competition was adjudged by judges, KN Koirala and KL Koirala and the winners were awarded with prizes. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Rohit Sapkota.

Makha residents irked by erratic water supply

MANGAN, 16 Nov: The public of Makha 10th Mile and nearby Dara Goan in East Sikkim have been facing acute shortage of drinking water for the past few weeks.

NHPC sponsors Chicken Pox vaccination for Makha School students

MANGAN: Ninety children below the age of 12 years studying at Makha Secondary School were administered chicken-pox vaccination on 16 April in an immunization programme organized by NHPC Teesta Stage-V Hydro-Electric Project at the school. The vaccination was administered by a paramedical team from NHPC Hospital, Balutar.

NHPC constructs additional floor for Makha school

MANGAN: The NHPC [Teesta Stage-V hydel project] has sponsored the construction of an additional floor at the Makha Secondary School building in East Sikkim which was inaugurated on Saturday by the Chief Medical Officer, NHPC, Dr TKR Naga.
