373 clear SCS and SPS prelims

GANGTOK, 24 July: 373 out of the 2,679 aspirants who had appeared for the junior grade Sikkim State Civil Service [SCS] and Sikkim State Police Services [SPS] preliminary examinations on Sunday have cleared the exams. The results were put up on the notice board of the Sikkim Public Service Commission office near old West Point school today at around 4 pm.
The 373 candidates will now have to sit for the main exams followed by the viva voce. The preliminary examinations were held for 25 posts of Under Secretary and 2 posts of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
The SPSC has said that the candidates who have cleared the prelims can opt for either of the two posts or both.
The results will also be put up on the SPSC website spscskm.gov.in on Friday, it is informed.
While 5,431 candidates had registered for the preliminary examinations, only 3,189 candidates took their admit cards for the exams, of whom, as mentioned, 2,679 took the exam. In the prelims held in October last year, which was later cancelled by the SPSC, 3,611 candidates had given both the papers.

SDF sweeps panchayat polls, improves on 2007 performance

GANGTOK, 05 Nov: The run-up to Panchayat polls 2012 had heated up to a level which had increased speculations on the people’s verdict sealed in EVMs which were opened for counting today. Substantially more Zilla and Panchayat wards went to polls on 03 November 2012 than were required in the last elections held in 2007. Any hopes of Opposition-backed Independents making any dent in the hustings were however misplaced as the SDF went on to improve even further on its 2007 performance, blanking out Independents completely from two districts at the Zilla level and holding them to the 2007 tally in the remaining two.
The ruling Front has secured 103 of 108 Zilla panchayat wards in the State, leaving only 5 seats for Independent Candidates. In 2007, even though there were slightly fewer Zilla seats at 93, Independents had managed to bag seven. In percentage points, SDF occupies 95.37% of the Zilla wards now against its share of 91.39% in the last panchayat.
Opposition-backed panchayat campaigns failed to break the Independent drought at the Zilla level in West Sikkim and saw their tally fall in South Sikkim. No Independents won a Zilla seat in West district either in 2007 or this time around and in South district Independents saw their tally come down from three in 2007 to One in 2012. And even this is only a technicality in that the Zilla which was bagged by an Independent in South Sikkim had no official SDF candidate and both Independents in the fray were SDF-backed. So the Opposition blanked out here as well. If this is counted in the SDF kitty, then the party’s percentage proportion at Zilla level goes up to 96.29%.
At the ward-level, with 13 results withheld, SDF occupies 884 of the 974 wards which works out to 90.75%. This is a slight dip from its 2007 performance when it has secured 815 of the 889 panchayat wards [91.67%] in the State at that time. Interestingly, the figures for Independents at the ward level have been held up by the 42 wards won by Independents in East district making up nearly half the state-level tally of Independents. Across the State, Independents have won 89 wards. Last time, they had won 75 wards.
Interestingly, while some Opposition political parties [CPM, Congress and SGPP] were officially in the panchayat fray in 2007, this time Congress fielded candidates only on two wards and all others stayed away. Politicking however was visibly more frenetic this time, but to no avail. If anything, the Opposition involvement in the run-up led to Independents not only reducing their numbers in the winning pedestal, but also drastically bringing down their conversion rate [calculated on number of seats won against number contested].
The conversion rate for Independents at the Zilla level this year was 7.14% [they won 5 out of 70 seats contested]. This figure was 11.47% in 2007 when they had managed to win 7 seats out of 61 contested. The conversion rate dip at the ward level is similar with Independents posting a 21.86% conversion rate [winning 89 out of 407 contested] this time against the conversion rate of 26.97% they posted in 2007 when they won 75 out of the 278 panchayat wards they contested.

CM congratulates all on outstanding Board exam results

GANGTOK, 01 June [IPR]: The Chief Minister has congratulated the entire education family for the outstanding performance of students in Class X and XII board examinations this year [see box for Sikkim’s performance in CBSE Board exams]. In his congratulatory note to the children, teachers and the department, the Chief Minister has expressed his hearty satisfaction with the results and has appreciated the hard work and effort put in by the teaching community of the state.
“The result which we have seen today is not the outcome of one year’s effort alone”, the Chief Minister said, adding that the result is the outcome of “years of effort, care and dedication put in by teachers since the tender age of children”. The journey of Education starts from the primary level where the primary teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the children for future and preparing them for the higher education, the Chief Minister has said.
This can also be attributed to the overall improvement in the educational policy of the State Government. The Chief Minister has wished the students all the success in their future career prospects and called upon them to keep up the good work.
Further, expressing his deep gratitude for the noble service rendered by the teachers of the state, the Chief Minister has hoped that the entire education family will continue to do so and strive even harder for the development of human resource of the state.

All tenth graders at Takste International School pass Cambridge International Board Exam with flying colours

GANGTOK, 25 Jan: Principal of the Taktse International School, Phuntsok Lauenstein, has announced that the school received the tenth grade 2011 Cambridge International Board Exam results yesterday and that all its eight students have performed well.
A press release informs that one student, Nicha Kamnerdmanee, scored two ‘A’s, the highest possible score that a student can achieve on the Cambridge International Exam. Her high IGCSE (Cambridge) scores will earn her a seat at University in Thailand, directly from class ten, without having to attend classes eleven and twelve.
Tenzing Choeden Namgyal also produced excellent results, scoring ‘A’ s in three subjects. Simrin Tamhane and Kushan Battacharya obtained ‘A’ s in two subjects and Shagun Limboo scored an’A’ in one. The IGCSE exams are recognized and highly respected by Universities throughout India as well as abroad, the release mentions.
Taktse is adding an eleventh grade this year (2012).  In February, four students will continue their studies in class eleven at Taktse, beginning the  two-year syllabus that culminates in the A-levels (class twelve board exams) in 2013, the release informs.
The Taktse Board and Principal have congratulated all eight students for their hard work and excellent scores. The Taktse Board, the release adds, “is pleased that Taktse’s emphasis on reading, high expectations, and intensive teacher training is producing results”.

IRBn recruitment results to be announced on 25 Jan

GANGTOK, 24 Jan: Continuing with its efforts to undertake the largest recruitment drive ever at one go in the State, the India Reserve Battalion [IRBn], Sikkim, is going to announce the final results of the recruitment of  500 jawans for its two newly raised Battalions on 25 January. These will be available on the notice boards of all the police stations, offices of all the SDPOs, offices of all the District SPs and the Police Headquarters in Gangtok, after 10 AM on 25 Jan. Besides, these will also be available at the official website of the Sikkim Police i.e. www.sikkimpolice.nic.in.
Briefing media persons in this regard, the Inspector General of the Armed Police, Akshay Sachdeva said that the final results have been based on each candidate’s individual performance in physical, written and oral tests conducted last year. He stated that the selected candidates will be required to report at the Police headquarters, during the working hours between 01 to 11 February, barring the public holidays and Sundays, along with their original documents.
He further added that they will have to bring with them Sikkim Subject Certificate, Date of Birth certificate, Reserved Category certificate, Qualification certificate and the Employment Card. The selected candidates will have to undergo medical fitness tests and character verification, before joining the India Reserve Battalion, Sikkim, which will have an all India posting liability, informed.
The Inspector General of the Armed Police revealed that despite a fifty per cent i.e. 250 seats being reserved for Home Guards, only 22 such candidates could get through and rest of the seats went to the open category, as was stipulated in the advertisement itself, bringing the total of selected candidates from the open category to 478. He made it clear that they too will get reservations as per the State Government norms.
It may be mentioned here that the viva-voce for the recuritment had taken place on 15, 16, 18, 21 and 22 of November, 2011 at the Sikkim Police Headquarters in Gangtok. About 5,000 candidates had appeared for the physical efficiency test held in all the four districts between 21 July to 06 August, 2011. Some 1,400 of them were cleared for the written test held at four centres on 28 August, 2011. West Point School and the TNA in Gangtok were the centres for the East and North districts, while JNV, Rothak in West district and Government Senior Secondary School, Namchi were the examination centres for the West and South districts.
