Namchi Girls School wins state-level Science Exhibition

GANGTOK, 07 Oct: Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School of South District has won the state level Science Exhibition held on the theme ‘Science and Society’. Rangpo Senior Secondary School of East District and Nandugaon Senior Secondary School of South District were placed in the second and third positions respectively.
A press release informs that the event concluded on 05 October and was attended by Principal Secretary, HRDD, Thomas Chandy. The 20 best exhibits of the exhibition will be representing the state at the national level exhibition to be held on 11 November later this year.
The participating schools were Hee-Gyathang SSS, Mangan SSS, Uttarey SS, Khaniserbong SS, Nandugaon SS, Namchi Girls SS, Rong SS, Rateypani SSS, Rhenock SSS , Nandok SS, Bahai SS, Enchey SSS , Kyidi Khang SS, Rumtek SSS, Biraspati Parsai SSS , PNG SSS, Tadong SSS, Middle Camp SS, Rangpo SSS and Bermoik Tokal SSS.
The state level science exhibition was organised by SCERT Gangtok.

Master trainers for electoral roll revision complete 2nd phase training

GANGTOK, 25 Sept [IPR]: The 2nd phase training of State Level Master Trainers in connection with the special summary revision of electoral rolls is being organized on 26 and 27 September for South and West districts in the conference hall, SIRD, Karfectar, Jorethang.
The training is being held as per the directives of Election Commission of India as a preparatory measure for the field level officers and trainers on matters connected with the special summary revision of electoral rolls and for the conduct of the forthcoming General Election to Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly-2014.
About 50 officers each from South and West districts will participate in the said training. Similar training will also be organised on 28 September, 2013 in the conference hall of Election Department for the concerned officers of East and North districts. Training will be imparted by the State Level Master Trainers (SLMTs) who have been trained by the IIIDEM, Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi. The training will start at 9:30 AM. All appointed officers are requested to participate in the said training on the appointed date and time.

PNGS student wins State Level Science Seminar

GANGTOK, 20 Sept: State Level Science Seminar on ‘Water Co-operation: Issues & Challenges’ was held in Gangtok on Thursday. The seminar was organised by SCERT, Gangtok in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Education, Kolkata.
Earlier, the district level seminar for East and North district was held on 03 and 04 September, and for South & West district it was held on 09 September. The number of schools that participated from East district were 23, 05 from North, 29 from South and 22 from the West district.
A press release informs that Suveksha Tamang of PNGSS has won the State Level Science Seminar followed by Sangita Chettri of Tadong  SSS in second position and Shamuksha Sedai of Rangpo SSS in third position.
The winner Suveksha Tamang of PNGSS will represent the state at the National Level Science Seminar, which is scheduled to be held on 08 October 2013 at Meru Science Centre, Mumbai.
The first, second and third prize winners of the district level had participated at the State Level Science Seminar in Gangtok.
The panel of judges comprised of Dr. Robin Chettri [HoD Physics, from Government College Tadong], Dr. SC Joshi [Senior Scientist from GB Pant Institute], Pangthang and Vivek Paul [Executive Engineer from Central Water Commission, Gangtok].
The programme was also attended by Director, Technical Education & Training, HRDD, DK Pradhan.

4th edition of State Open Chess Tournament to be held in Feb


GANGTOK, 29 Jan: The 4th edition of the State-level Open Chess Tournament is being organized by Sikkim Democratic Front Bhawan Trust with technical support of Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] from 09 to 12 February here at SDF Bhawan.
More than 150 players are expected to participate in the tournament which boasts of around Rs 1 lakh as prize money in total. The tournament will follow the Swiss League System.
Addressing a press conference today, coordinator of the tournament, Kabita Subba mentioned that since the establishment of SDF Bhawan Trust, it has been engaged in different activities in the field of social upliftment.
“On these lines the Trust will be organizing the state-level open chess tournament for the fourth time this year. Participation in the tournament has been increasing every year especially when it comes to students,” she said.
Ms Subba informed that the Trust is also organizing a voluntary blood donation camp at SDF Bhawan with the support of STNM Hospital blood bank on 15 February. She invited the public to be a part of this initiative by donating their blood.
SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, who is also an international arbiter, informed that players would also be selected during this tournament for the upcoming North-East FIDE Rating Chess Tournament scheduled to be held in the last week of February in Manipur. He informed that the selected players from the tournament will be representing the state in the said North-East tournament.
“The objective of the tournament is to provide more platforms to local players to evaluate and improve their game to reach higher levels. In a short span of time Sikkim has produced 9 young FIDE rated players at present”, said Mr Dhakal.
Rated players from Sikkim are Rakesh Gurung [1853], Thendup Tamang [1678], Durga Sharma [1674], Leela Prasad Acharya [1670], Rahul Gurung [1593], Phurba Bhutia [1570], Sushmita Lama [1540], Pranisha Gurung [1513] and Jonah Lepcha [1549].
Interested participants can collect the forms of the tournament from the SDF office at Indira Bye Pass road.

1,250 sportspersons descend on Gangtok for 9-day event

GANGTOK, 15 Dec: Around 1,250 athletes from across the state are participating in the 2nd edition of the state-level Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan [PYKKA] Sports Competitions 2011-12 which was inaugurated here at the Tashi Namgyal Academy playground today.

State-level PYKKA games to begin 15 Dec


GANGTOK, 06 Dec: Sports and Youth Affairs Department is organizing the state-level Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan [PYKKA] Competition from 15 to 23 Dec at venues around Gangtok.
Department officials are working round-the-clock to organize the games in ten disciplines spread across venues at Paljor Stadium complex, Guards Ground and Tashi Namgyal Academy ground.
