SU Microbiology students participate in intl conference, one earns Best Presenter recognition

GANGTOK, 31 Oct: Four research scholars from Sikkim University attended an International conference on ‘Agriculture, Food Sciences and Environment Technology for Sustainable Global Development’ (AFSET -2012) on 28 and 29 October at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi  organised by Krishi Sanskriti. One of them, Kriti Ghatani, a PhD scholar from the Department of Microbiology at the university was awarded the Best Oral Presentation recognition.
The conference was the premier forum for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental and applied Agriculture, Food Sciences, Environmental Technology and its Applications from around the world.
Students, research scholars and doctorates from various universities in India and abroad participated. There were 163 research papers out of which 111 were selected for oral presentation and 8 for poster presentation.
A press release from Sikkim University informs that M Phil students of the Department of Microbiology, Sayak Das and Mingma Sherpa presented the Master’s dissertation work on Sikkim’s Tatopani. Kriti Ghatani and Shankar Prasad Sha both PHD scholars, the first batch of the, would be Doctorates of the Department of Microbiology, Sikkim University also presented their papers during the conference.
Each of their research papers were selected for oral presentation on Food Sciences. Kriti Ghatani’s paper was related to the efficacy of beneficial bacteria as a probiotic for cholesterol lowering under supervision of Dr. B M Tamang [Assistant professor, Dept. of Microbiology].
Shankar Prasad Sha presented his work on “Haria: A traditionally rice fermented alcoholic beverage” supervised by Dr Nagendra Thakur [Assistant professor, Dept. of Microbiology].
The three papers have been published in “International Journal of Agriculture and Food Science Technology”. Krishi Sanskriti also evaluated the delegates for the best poster presentation and oral presentation. Out of the 111 presenters, the award for Best Oral presentation was given to Kriti Ghatani from the Department of Micrbiology, Sikkim University, the release mentions.

They acknowledge the present Vice Chancellor Dr TB Subba; Registrar and Professor, Dr JP Tamang; Fellow Academic, Dr CB Sunwar; Associate and Assistant Professors of Microbiology Department and Dakshita Lawer from the finance section”, the release adds.

Civil Military Liaison Conference held between State and Military officers

GANGTOK, 06 March [IPR]: Civil Military Liaison Conference (CMLC) between the State Government officers and the military was held at a local hotel in Gangtok, today. The conference chaired by the Chief Secretary of Sikkim, Karma Gyatso was attended by GOC 17 Mountain Division.
The conference started with the welcome address by the Chief Secretary, Karma Gyatso. The conference discussed various issues between the defence and the state and many issues were resolved in the house after detail discussion.
To mention the issues that was taken up and most of them resolved were:-
1.       Foreign labourers problem.
2.       Rail infrastructure
3.       Provision of facilities at Pakyong Airport
4.       Construction of Operational Tracks
5.       Construction of Tunnels
6.       Supply of SNT vehicles to the Army
7.       Provision of Electricity to Army Installations
8.       Allotment of Parking space for Army light vehicles
9.       Civil Recovery Vehicles
10.   Movement of Tourists in Bad weather
11.   Facilities for Tourists at Nathula
12.   Water Supply to New Military Station, Gangtok
13.   Raising of Sikkim Scouts Battalion
14.   Road Widening in North Sikkim
15.   Damage of Transmission lines due to Road widening
The GOC 17 Mountain Division thanked the Chief Secretary for organizing this conference after a gap of two years and hoped that the army officials and the state administration shall function in close coordination under the guidance of the experienced and senior Chief Secretary of Sikkim.
Besides the above issues, those related to national interest were also discussed by virtue of Sikkim being a border state.
The Conference ended with a Vote of Thanks followed by presentation of tokens by the Chief Secretary, DGP and Additional Chief Secretary.

Karma Gyatso delivers only presentation on Crisis Management at Conference of Chief Secretaries;

CONFERENCE OF CHIEF SECRETARIES 
GANGTOK, 05 Feb: Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India inaugurated the Annual Conference of the Chief Secretaries on 03 February, 2012 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Karma Gyatso, Chief Secretary, Sikkim attended the Conference along with the Chief Secretaries of all States & UTs. This year’s the Chief Secretary’s Conference gained importance as various important issues pertaining to the development of Infrastructure, Internal Security, Centre – State relations, Innovation initiatives, Skill Development, Crisis Management and Good Governance were discussed at length including the opinion on the fresh policy initiatives sought from the Chief Secretaries.
Karma Gyatso, Chief Secretary, Sikkim, was given the privilege of being the only Chief Secretary among the other 34 Chief Secretaries of various States / UTs to make a detailed presentation on Crisis Management and the Sikkim experience of handling the Rescue, Relief and Rehabilitation works in the aftermath of 18th Sept. 2012 Earthquake. This privilege was accorded to the Chief Secretary, Sikkim because of the fact that the Chief Minister and the State Government took immediate and prompt action to mitigate the sufferings of the people to the satisfaction of all.
The presentation made by Karma Gyatso was discussed at length by the delegates and much appreciation was made in the deft handling of the situation and immediate action initiated by the State Government for the relief, rescue, re-construction and re-habilitation initiatives. This was applauded by all including the Union Home Ministry and Union Cabinet Secretary.
The Chief Secretary, Sikkim, also attended a Dinner hosted by the Prime Minister at his residence on 3rd Feb. 2012 wherein the  Prime Minister inquired about the request made by Pawan Chamling, Chief Minister of Sikkim, as to whether the advance released for re-construction and re-habilitation under Prime Minister’s Special Package has been received or not. Gyatso conveyed the gratitude of the  Chief Minister and the people of Sikkim for receiving the 1st installment of funds towards the Prime Minister’s Special Package for Sikkim.

Rhinology meet at SMIMS

GANGTOK, 24 April: The Department of ENT, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Gangtok and STNM Hospital are jointly organizing the 24th Annual Conference of the All India Rhinology Society (RHINOCON 2011) from 28 to 30 April at SMIMS, informs a press release.
The conference will offer a common platform for ENT, Plastic and Reconstructive specialists and Neurosurgeons to exchange views and improve their skills and knowledge through a collaborative effort.
