Golay continues Upper Burtuk campaign

GANGTOK, 08 Apr: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha president, PS Tamang [Golay] interacted with the people of Bye-Pass, Upper and Lower Lingding, Vajra, Sai Mandir, Swastik, Selep Tank and surrounding areas under Upper Burtuk constituency today. It may be recalled that he was elected on an SDF ticket from Upper Burtuk in the last term and is back in the fray as an SKM candidate this time.
The people of the area alleged that the SDF government has ignored the area for the past 20 years, informs an SKM press release issued by general secretary [publicity], Jacob Khaling.
The release informs that the people alleged that the SDF government has exploited and lied to them. The party has claimed that people of the area were not happy with DR Thapa as the SDF’s choice of candidate for the constituency and therefore, have decided to vote for SKM instead. The release also alleges that the SDF candidate is distributing money to the people of the area.
In the meeting at Vajra, the party observed a 2 minute silence in memory of those killed in the road mishap that occurred today near Gufa Dara under Barfung constituency. The party has expressed its condolence to the bereaved families.
While conveying his condolences, Mr. Tamang stated that the high number of road accidents in the state was a serious matter. He assured to install proper road safety measures at accident prone areas and improve the road conditions along with proper education on traffic and driving.
Addressing the gathering at Burtuk, the SKM president accused the SDF president of playing cheap politics and conspiring against him, which he said, forced him to stay away from his constituency for the past five years. Apologizing to the people of Burtuk he said that he decided to contest again from Burtuk so that he can make up for the five years lost. He urged people to give him another chance to serve them.
While sharing his plans and programmes for Burtuk, Mr Tamang stated that he will dedicate himself to the people of Burtuk. He also interacted with the business community of Gangtok and Arithang later in the evening today, the release adds.

Accident claims one near Burtuk


GANGTOK, 30 July: A taxi [Bolero] went off the road near the Christian Burial Ground between Burtuk and Bojoghari this evening claiming the life of the driver.
The driver, Prakash Chettri, was alone at the time and died on the spot when the Bolero he was driving fell off the road at around 4 PM today. The body of the deceased has been recovered.

Road accident claims driver


GANGTOK, 25 July: An accident claimed the life of a person when a vehicle went down the road here at Swastik, Burtuk last night. The taxi vehicle was on its way from Gangtok to Bhojoghari. The driver, Kishor Sherpa of the Maxx taxi bearing registration number SK-01 J 1217 died on the spot when the vehicle fell down the road at around 9.00 p.m. It is informed that the vehicle went down around 1000 feet from the highway and stuck just above 100 feet from the Helipad Road.
After getting the information from the Sadar thana Patrolling team, a team of Gangtok Fire Station led by FSO, Phuchung Lepcha also reached the spot and helped to take out the body of the driver with the help of Police team and locals. The reason for the accident is not yet known.

One killed, 5 injured in Burtuk road mishap

GANGTOK, 08 Sept: One person was killed and 5 others injured when a taxi-jeep went off the road and plunged around 60 feet down a jhora at Burtuk here.
The accident took place at around 5 pm this evening when the Bolero, SK-04-0627, lost control and slid off the road at a turning a short distance north of Vajra cinema hall. Eye-witness accounts report that the driver was attempting to overtake a taxi on the turning only to find a bus approaching from the other side.

Christian Burial Ground Committee inspects cemetery, finds encroachments

GANGTOK, 25 Aug: The executive members of Christian Burial Ground Committee, led by their president, Pastor Joseph Tamang, made a spot verification of the Christian Burial Ground at Bagthang, Burtuk here on 22 August. 
The team called on the contractor, Rupa Chettri, and showed her the spot where the construction work has to be started. The project has been funded under the MPLAD scheme for Rs. 1,00,000 and includes two units of toilets/ bathrooms, footpath, hydrant, halting shed etc, informs a press release.
