SSBBA felicitates bodybuilders


GANGTOK, 04 Jan: Sikkim State Body Building Association [SSBBA] today felicitated bodybuilders from the state for their impressive performance in the recently held body building competitions in December last year.
In the 10th Eastern India Body Building & Fitness Championship held at Howrah, West Bengal on 22 to 24 December, Arun Gurung [55 kg] won silver medal, Suresh Chettri [65 kg] won bronze, Norbu Tshering Bhutia [70 kg] won silver and Pema Dorjee Bhutia [75 kg & above] won bronze for the state. The state team was led by SSBBA chief coach, IB Gurung, who also served as the national judge.
In the 2nd Mr Himalayan Classic Body Building Championship held at Darjeeling from 28 to 30 December, Arun Gurung [60 kg] won gold, Tika Ram Pradhan [60 kg] won bronze, Suresh Chettri [65 kg] won silver, Paljor Bhutia [70 kg] won silver, Norbu Tshering Bhutia [70 kg] won bronze, Pema Dorjee Bhutia [75 kg] won silver and Sonam Dadul Bhutia [75 kg] won bronze.
Similarly, Subash Thapa [70 kg] stood on the 5th position, Ruben Mukhia [75 kg] on the 4th position and CB Dong [75 kg] on the 4th position. The state team was led by Sonam Paljor Bhutia as the team manager and chief coach, Mr Gurung served the competition as the national judge.
During a small function today, Mayor, KN Topgay, who is also the SSBBA president, and SSBBA general secretary, Anil Raj Rai honored these body builders with khadas.
While congratulating the body builders, Mr Topgay encouraged them to work harder and train and practice to win medals at the national level. He mentioned that the association has been playing its role to promote body building in the state and to provide national exposure to local body builders. He stressed upon the need for joint efforts from all sides to promote bodybuilding in the state.
“Due to the hard work and constant efforts of the SSBBA, body building is in a good place in the state at present. The association has been trying its best to gain support from the government and other organizations for the welfare of the bodybuilders”, said the Mayor.
SSBBA general secretary, Mr Rai congratulated the body builders for winning medals and honour for the state and further encouraged them to work hard to receive the same results at National competitions too in the future. Mr Rai informed that Mr Sikkim and then Mr India are scheduled to be held in the month of March this year followed by other competitions in different parts of the country.
SSBBA chief coach, Mr Gurung mentioned that local body builders were appreciated as the most disciplined in both these competitions. He further informed that the association has been putting its full efforts to take local body builders to the national and higher levels and encouraged the body builders to continue with the training to be in good form.

Sikkim bodybuilders impress in Jharkhand


GANGTOK, 21 March: The five-member team of the Sikkim State Body Building Association [SSBBA] flexed impressively enough to leave a mark at the Eastern India Bodybuilding Championship 2012. The championship, held in Jharkhand from 11 to 13 March, saw four of the bodybuilders secure positions.
An SSBBA press release informs that Pema Dorjee Bhutia stood third in the 70 kg category, with both, Lekhak Rai [in 65 kg category] and Ganesh Neopaney [in 70 kg above category], securing the fourth position in their respective categories while Arun Gurung stood fifth in the 60 kg category.
The team was accompanied by the Chief Coach, IB Gurung.

Sikkim bodybuilders warm up for Federation Cup Masters in Uttarakhand


GANGTOK, 27 Jan: A six-member Sikkim State Body Building Association [SSBBA] is all set to flex some muscles in the 11th edition of Federation Cup Masters and Handicap National Body Building Championship-2012 to be held on 04 and 05 February at Haldwani in Uttarakhand.
This is for the first time that a team from Sikkim is taking part in this championship.
Former Mr Sikkim, Pema Dorji Bhutia will represent the state in the Masters category [40 to 45 years] in the championship. Likewise, other team members are Arun Gurung [60 kg], former Mr Sikkim Suresh Chettri [60-65 kg], Norbu Tshering Bhutia [65 to 70 kg], Sonam Dadul Bhutia [70 kg] and Ganesh Neopaney [80 kg above].
The championship is being organized by the Uttarakhand Body Building Association under the aegis of Indian Body Building and Fitness Federation, which will have body builders from different parts of the country.
The team accompanied by manager, Robin Pradhan and chief coach, IB Gurung, who will also serve the championship as a national judge, will be leaving on 01 February for the championship.
Addressing a press conference today, chief coach, Mr Gurung stated that this would be a tough one as this championship is considered to be one of the more prestigious and competitive ones after the Mr India Body Building Competition in the country.
However, he stated that local body builders have been doing well in the contests in and outside the state for sometime along with the improvement in body building standards in the state.
Mr Gurung informed that the championship also has a contest for handicapped bodybuilders, which, he said, is also a way of bringing them into the mainstream. On the same, he stated that if any such person is interested then the SSBBA is there to help them out.
The association has also expressed its gratitude to all its well wishers for their support.
After this championship, the SSBBA team will represent the state in the upcoming Eastern India Body Building Championship scheduled to be held in the first week of March in Jharkhand and then at the Mr India Body Building Championship scheduled to be held in the first week of April at Pune.
SSBBA is also organizing the Mr Sikkim Body Building Championship on 24 March at Gangtok.

Sikkim bodybuilders strike gold in Darjeeling


…FLEX THEIR WAY TO TWO GOLDS, 2 SILVER AND 1 BRONZE MEDAL AT HIMALAYAN CLASSIC BODY BUILDING CHAMPIONSHIP

GANGTOK, 05 Jan: Sikkim bodybuilders flexed enough muscles to impress everyone at the 1st Himalayan Classic Body Building Championship held on 02 and 03 January at Gorkha Rang Manch, Darjeeling.
Out of 11 body builders from the state, 9 made it to the finals of the championship. Arun Gurung won the gold medal in the 55 kg category and also bagged the ‘Overall Best Poser’ of the Championship while former Mr Sikkim, Suresh Chettri also won gold in the 60 kg category.
