Sikkim was conferred with the most competitive state in India award in the category of North East economies by The Mint Newspaper. The award was handed over in a ceremony held on 30 September in New Delhi. Principal Secretary-cum-Principal Resident Commissioner, Sikkim House, New Delhi, Govind Mohan received the award on behalf of the state government.

Governor announces award for best rural reporting
GANGTOK, 06 July: With an aim to encourage journalists in the area of rural reporting, Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh, has committed to institute a best reporter in rural journalism award, informs a press release. The newly elected members of the Press Club of Sikkim called on the Governor this morning at his official residence at Raj Bhavan, during which the Governor made the announcement.
The Governor informed that the award would be given every year to the reporter who covers rural-based news and stories. The award will be presented on the occasion of Independence Day at a function to be held at Raj Bhavan, the release informs.

KC Pradhan becomes first Indian to be conferred Royal Horticulture Society's Veitch Memorial Medal
GANGTOK, 03 July: Respected forester and plantsman, KC Pradhan, who has also served Sikkim as its Chief Secretary, will, one Monday, become the first Indian and only the third Asian to receive the prestigious Veitch Memorial Medal of the Royal Horticulture Society, United Kingdom.
The RHS announced Mr. Pradhan’s name for this year’s VMM along with three others at its annual general meeting convened on 01 July, last Friday. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 04 July, Monday, at the Hampton Court Palace Premiere Flower Show- the largest flower show in the world. Mr. Pradhan will however not be able to travel to England and the award, which will be presented by Princess Alexandra, will be received on his behalf by a nominee of the president of the RHS. BBC 2 (in UK) will telecast the awards ceremony on 04 July at 7.30pm.

Hemakarna and Sancharani Subba Memorial Trust awards scholarships

SAA congratulates Tarundeep on NEC Excellence Award
GANGTOK, 14 June: Arjuna awardee and International archer from Sikkim, Tarundeep Rai, will be awarded the North Eastern Council Chairman's Sports Excellence Award on 16 June at the 60th NEC Plenary under the Chairmanship of DoNER Minister and Chairman NEC at the Parliament House annexe, New Delhi, informs a press release.
This award is being given to Tarundeep Rai in recognition of his hard work and excellence in the field of archery and for winning laurels for the state as well as the country at International meets such as Commonwealth and Asian Games. He will be given a cash award of Rs 5 lakhs for his Silver medal in 2010 Asian Games held in China and Rs 3 lakhs for his bronze medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games held at New Delhi.
The President and members of Sikkim Archery Association congratulate Mr Rai for his achievement and wish him all the best for his future tournaments, the release states.

DBT-CREST award for ICAR-Sikkim Joint Director
GANGTOK, 24 April: Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, Dr. H. Rahman, has been granted the “Cutting Edge Research Enhancement and Scientific Training Award” [DBT-CREST] to undertake research in frontier areas like Nano-Biotechnology for a period of six months, informs a press release.
Dr. Rahman will work with Prof Kelly Hughes, Professor, Chair of Microbiology in University of Fribourg, Fribourgh, Switzerland on “Development of flagellar nano-tubes to be used as vaccine for Salmonellosis” which will open a new area in the field of vaccinology, the release adds.
