No contamination at Namchi water source, reassure PHE officials

NAMCHI, 31 Aug: The PHE department has dismissed rumours of the possible contamination of the only water source of Namchi at Bermali. There were rumors going around Namchi and its surrounding areas that a dead body had been found in the main water source leading to possible contamination.
In fact, due to this rumor, people here had started using bottled water extensively. PHE Department officials, it is learnt, conducted an inspection on 28 August and determined that the body was found 300ft below the main water source hence there was no possibility of contamination.
The body had been removed by the police on 26 August and sent for autopsy to Namchi District Hospital

Monday night rain runs Namchi dry, floods rumours as well

NAMCHI, 09 June: The heavy downpour of 06 June caused a number of landslides at different places under Ravangla sub division which, apart from spreading some worry, also damaged the water supply pipelines leading towards Namchi from Barmeli near Ravangla.
Water supply in Namchi was finally restored yesterday after three days by a team from the PHE Deptt, South District, and taps started flowing again by evening. The public of Namchi were however, gripped by rumours of that water supply would remain suspended for another two days which led to people rushing to tank up from the nearest water sources in their private vehicles. By evening, people had even started hiring taxis to ferry water to their homes.

PHE Secy leads trek to scout water sources to augment supply for Namchi

NAMCHI: Secretary Water Security and Public Health Engineering Department, TB Rajalim, led a two-day trek into the mountains above Ravangla to seek out new sources and inspect the existing water tapping infrastructure there to figure out ways and means to augment the water supply situation for Namchi.
The Secretary was accompanied on the inspection by Additional CE, TT Bhutia, SE (S/W) BP Kharel, DE, DC Khatiwara, DE (South) Rajdeep Rai, AE (Ravangla) Saurav Lepcha and JE (Ravangla) Sunil Rai.
The trek first headed for the Bermeley source where water is currently being tapped for supply to Namchi.
The tour started on 08 April at 8:30 a.m. from Ravangla and reached Bermeley after four hours of trekking the team. Bermeley is situated at 8,300 ft.
