Yuva Kriti Mela begins in Singtam


GANGTOK, 18 March: A three-day long state-level Yuwa Kriti Mela was inaugurated by Khamdong-Singtam MLA, Am Prasad Sharma, at Singtam Mandi Bazaar today. The event, organized by Nehru Yuwa Kendra-Gangtok, is an exhibition of items prepared by various non-governmental organizations from across the state.
On the occasion, Sonam Bhutia of Tadong and Shyamkala Dahal of Luing were awarded with State awards by the NYK Gangtok. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 15,000 each and Letters of Appreciation.  The inaugural day also included folk song and dance competitions. [NANDU DUTRAJ]

MP interacts with youth at NYK convention


NAMCHI, 21 Feb [IPR]: “Choices made by us today will determine our future therefore it’s very important for us to make correct choices in our lives”  stated MP Lok Sabha, PD Rai during the District Youth Convention 2011-12 organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Namchi Chapter at community hall here in the district headquarters of South District.
During this convention an interaction session was also held where the participants put forward their queries as well as grievances, for which chief guest for the occasion Mr Rai tried to answer and remove the doubts that were there in the participants mind.
Mr. Rai also informed that during the month of May this year a high level and very important  5-day workshop will be held for youth in the state , therefore he urged the youth to come forward and participate in it.
Further he added that it is very important for the youth and younger generation to tap the opportunities that are available for them and make full use of it. Mr. Rai also appealed to the participants who were present in numbers to take back home something constructive and creative from this convention and work towards it.
D.C South Mr. A.K Singh who was also present on the occasion as guest of honour addressed the gathering and expressed his satisfaction with the work of NYK and assured full cooperation from his side to them.

Ten-day Winter Adventure Camp concludes at Chemchey


NAMCHI, 19 Feb: The ten-day Winter Adventure Camp for the volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra [NYK] of four North East states of India concluded today here at Indian Himalayan Center for Adventure and Eco Tourism (IHCAE) Chemchey, South Sikkim. This Winter Adventure Camp was organized by IHCAE, Chemchey and was funded by the NYK under Rajiv Gandhi Adventure scheme, Government of India. Total 26 volunteers, 14 from Nagaland, 4 from Mizoram, 6 from Tripura and 2 from Sikkim participated in this camp which had started on 10 February.
At the valedictory function today, Director IHCAE, GT Bhutia was present as the chief guest while it was also attended by OSD IHCAE , Kazi Sherpa, Instructors Shangey Bhutia, Anand Gurung, Mohan Bishwakarma, Wangdi  Lama Pema and Wangdi Sherpa.
Director, GT Bhutia in his address congratulated all the trainees for the successful completion of this Winter Camp and said that this opportunity to learn in this center will help them in their coming days and also urged all the participants to implement the knowledge and teach the skills that they had learnt during the camp.
The participants were also provided with certificates and trophies wherein the Best Overall Boys’ trainee was awarded to Kekneito from Nagaland while the Best Overall Girls’trainee was awarded to Chieshu Lie of Nagaland.

Volunteers from 4 states undergoing camp on survival strategies

NAMCHI, 12 Feb: The 10 day long Winter Adventure Camp for the 26 volunteers of Nehru Yuva Kendra of four states of India began on 10 February. On 11 February the formal inauguration was conducted here at the Indian Himalayan Center for Adventure and Eco. Tourism (IHCAE) Chamchey, South Sikkim.
Being organized by IHCAE, Chamchey the winter adventure camp was funded by the NYK under Rajiv Gandhi Adventure scheme, Government of India. A total of 26 volunteers are participating of which 14 are from Nagalang, 4 from Mizoram, 6 from Tripura and 2 volunteers from Sikkim who will be participating in this camp and will be provided training in different skills of surviving during this winter adventure camp.
The formal inauguration of the camp was conducted where NYK Zonal Director Sukdev Singh was the Chief Guest while the programme was also attended by Coodinator NYK (S/E) Puran Chettri, Director IHCAE GT Bhutia, OSD IHCAE Kazi Sherpa, Senoor Account NYK Dilip Sharma and the trainers of the adventure camp.
Director IHCAE GT Bhutia welcomed all the participants and informed that this was the first batch for the year attending the adventure camp in IHCAE. He further informed that all the volunteers will be given training in different survival skills for different situations; the trainees will also have to undergo physical training. He urged to all the participants to maintain discipline during this camp and learn as much as they can.
Chief Guest NYK Zonal Director Sukdev Singh in his address encouraged the participants saying that they were the best volunteers of their respective states and this was the best opportunity to make them more efficient by learning different skills. By the end of the camp, he said that they would be among the best in helping others during times of emergency. He also urged to maintain discipline during the camp.

Shahid Diwas observed at Aritar


RHENOCK, 31 Jan: Shahid Diwas [Martyrs’ Day] was observed at Aritar-Khamdong, East Sikkim, with a special function organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra, Gangtok, and jointly hosted by Nava Jagrati Sangh and Aritar-Khamdong Gram Panchayat Unit at the Sangh Bhawan.
The programme was attended by NYK, Gangtok, District Youth Coordinator Puran Chettri as the chief guest while it was chaired by Government Contractor Chewang Norbu Sherpa.
The Sangh’s president, Subash Dahal in his welcome address highlighted the activities of the Sangh and informed that the Sangh was conferred the Best Club award at the district-level and Outstanding Club award at the state-level by NYK in 2011.
The Sangh and Aritar-Khamdong Gram Panchayat felicitated the families of Ex-Panchayat Late Balram Ghimirey, Ex-Area MLA Karna Bahadur Chamling, MLA Chujachen, Puran Kumar Gurung, Journalist Bhanuraj Thapa, Ram Gauri Sangralaya president, Ganesh Kumar Pradhan and members of Aritar -Khamdong GPU.
Ganesh Kumar Pradhan, Chewang Norbu Sherpa and DYC Puran Chettri also addressed the gathering.

NYK organises essay competition at Makha


MANGAN, 24 Jan:  NYK Gangtok in collaboration with RHI-SYS-TRE at Paksum Moonlight Sangh Patuk, East Sikkim organized an Essay Competition on 23 January on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose.
Ward Panchayat, Patuk, KB Chettri was present as the chief guest at the function which began with a welcome address by BB Chettri. The chief guest and president Moonlight Sangh, PK Chettri in their addresses spoke on the Netaji's contribution towards the nation and urged the coming generation to follow in his footsteps.
The competition was adjudged by judges, KN Koirala and KL Koirala and the winners were awarded with prizes. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Rohit Sapkota.

Run for Unity this Republic Day


GANGTOK, 13 Jan: A ‘Run for the Unity of the Country’ event is being organized by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs [SYA], Namchi, in association with District Administrative Centre [Namchi] and Nehru Yuva Kendra [Namchi] on the occasion of Republic Day on 26 January at Namchi.
The decision to organize this event was taken at a meeting held at the Namchi DAC and attended by the officials and representatives from SYA, DAC and NYK on 11 January.
The event will have Men’s Open Half Marathon of 21 kms for the 14-35 age-group and a prize money of Rs. 15,000 for the winner, Rs. 10,000 for the runner-up and a third prize of Rs. 7,000. The Women’s Open, a 15 km race, again for the age-group of 14-35 yrs, has prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 5,000 for first, second and third positions respectively. The final event will be the U-14 boys and girls Cross Country Race with Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000, and Rs. 2000 as first, second and third prizes respectively.
The Sports & Youth Affairs [Namchi] Assistant Director, NK Chettri informs that the main objective of the event is to promote national integration and unity among the people and also to encourage the youth and children towards sports.

Namchi NYK celebrates National Youth Day and Week


NAMCHI, 12 Jan: National Youth Day and Week 2012 was celebrated here today by Nehru Yuva Kendra at Marut Bhawan. Youth from different parts of South district participated in the celebration which had DPO Namchi, Pempa Norbu Sherpa as the chief guest.
National Youth Awardee Jairam Gupta and District Youth Awardees namely Roshan Kaushik, Deepak Rai, and Training Officer Disaster Management Cell, Abhishek Kharel were amongst others present.
The celebration started with a welcome address by Dilip Sharma, staff Nehru Yuva Kendra Namchi. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest focused on the life and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, and also shared words of encouragement with the youth. He said that the development of society lay in the hands of the youth, and so every youth should realize their responsibility towards society.
While special guest Roshan Kaushik, spoke on the present scenario of youth and another special guest Deepak Rai shared his views on the role of youth in national development.

NYK organizes block-level cultural competition for NGOs


GANGTOK, 10 Jan: A block-level cultural competition was organized by the Nehru Yuva Kendra in collaboration with Purano Namchi based, Gharelu Samaj, at Purano Namchi today.
SDM Namchi, Purna Yonzon was the chief guest and founder president of the Samaj was the guest of honour. In the competition, Gharelu Samaj, Nirman Samaj of Dambudara and Lakshya of Kitam bagged first, second and third prizes, respectively, informs a press release.
NYK District Youth Co-ordinator, Puran Chettri informed that the winner will go on to participate at the district level cultural programme and the district-level winners will further go on to the state-level Yuva Kriti scheduled to be held in February, the release informs.
In his address, the chief guest stated that the role of the NGO is to provide opportunities to the young and further encouraged the organization to continue with their good work and assured to provide all possible help and support to the organization.

Sikkim at NIC in Punjab


MANGAN, 02 Jan: The National Integration Camp (NIC) held at Ranbir College, Sangrur, Punjab by NYK-Sangrur, Punjab, was attended by a 23-member team from Sikkim. The Sikkim representation was accompanied by Sherap Bhutia of MYC. The NIC was organized as a get-together for exchange of traditions and culture between different States and was held from 23 to 29 Dec, 2011.
Meanwhile, from 06 Jan onwards, the NYK-Mangan is hosting an NIC at Malling School here which is scheduled to be attended by NYK members from Assam. [from DEEPAK SHARMA]

Skill up-gradation training at Sikip


NAMCHI, 09 Dec: A floriculture and soft-toy training programme on long-term skill up-gradation was conducted under the leadership of Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) volunteer, Randeep Rai of Sikip block. The training is being organized by Jharna Club of Omchu at the club house situated at Sikip block and is sponsored by Nehru Yuva Kendra, Namchi.
