Paryavaran Mahotsav at Gyalshing
GYALSHING, 29 June [IPR]: Gyalshing Nagar Panchayat, in coordination with Forest Department and State Pollution Control Board, organized a cleanliness and plantation programme on Saturday at Gyalshing bazaar as part of Paryavaran Mahotsav.
Officials and staff from UD&HD, Sikkim Police, SSB and Fire Service along with Chamber of Commerce and locals participated in the plantation drive. The drive was also attended by Additional Director, KNP, Udai Gurung.
SDM, (HQ), Hemmant Rai urged every individual to participate in the drive and highlighted the government’s vision to make Sikkim green and clean. ‘Go Green’ themed stickers and posters were also distributed to the public.

Paryavaran Mahotsav at Nazitam Agri Farm
GANGTOK, 29 June: Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 was observed by the officials and the staffs of Food Security and Agricultural Development Department at Nazitam Agricultural Farm, East-Sikkim, under Martam Rumtek constituency on Saturday.
Plantation of Bamboo saplings (Bambusa Bambos), locally known as Karay Baans as line fencing was carried out on the day. Around 150 to 200 saplings were planted around the farm covering an area of about 2.5 Ha, informs a press release.
This variety of Bamboo generally propagates through rhizobuim, clum cutting, brench cutting, and through seeds. This kind of bamboo requires an altitude of 300-1200metre for better growth.
Karay Baans is mainly used in construction of houses, making handicrafts, preparing furniture and in the paper industries as well. Furthermore it also contains calcareous deposit in the clum having medicinal values, the release mentions.

Gangtok Mechanical Subdivision celebrates Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014
GANGTOK, 29 June: Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 was celebrated at the Office of the Assistant Engineer (Mech.), Roads & Bridges Department, Lumsey, Tadong on 27 and 28 June.
A press release informs that on the first day of the celebration, officials along with the staff of Gangtok
Mechanical Subdivision carried out various activities like cleaning of the surrounding jhoras and channels, beautification and weeding at the garden located at the office premises and landscaping.
Weeding around the saplings planted last year and marking and recording of sapling details was also carried out.
Awareness address on Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 and on topics like waste management and carbon footprints was given to staff and public by Lawrence Lepcha, Assistant Engineer (Mech.), followed by interaction session.

Paryavaran Mahotsav continues in Namchi
Tools for the cleanliness drive were provided by Urban Development & Housing Department; Forest, Environment and Wildlife Management Department; Namchi Municipal Corporation and Patanjali Yog Samiti. 100 students, 10 teachers, 20 members of the local taxi union and 20 SDF youth took part in today’s mass cleanliness drive.
Speaking on the cleanliness drive, DFO (T) said that the students of the school have enthusiastically and with high spirits celebrated the ‘Paryavaran Mahotsav, 2014’. He also informed that young students should come forward and join hands to save the environment and further congratulated the school for winning the Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy on the occasion of the State World Environment Day.
In addition ACF (T) informed that it was highly appreciated that the students and the faculty have come forward for the mass cleanliness drive and also taken positive initiative towards saving the environment.
Speaking on the occasion, PK Rai, one of the teachers from Government Girls Senior Secondary School said that the mass cleanliness drive aims to educate and inculcate responsibility among students and the general public to keep the surroundings green and litter free.

Paryavaran Mahotsav in South Sikkim
NAMCHI, 22 June [IPR]: The ongoing Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 is being observed all over South district since 15 June with mass cleanliness, plantation and awareness programmes being carried out in the district by all the government departments/ Institutions, Private and Public Sectors, Panchayats/ Municipal Councils/ Nagar Panchayats, Colleges, Schools, NGOs, JFMCs, EDCs and civil societies in collaboration with the Forest Department (South).
The signature campaign for this program was kicked off on 15 June at Central Park Namchi which saw the participation of District Collector South along side other officials, staffs and members of government departments and other organizations.
DFO (T), M K Rai informing about the Forest Department’s preparation for the 2014 Paryavaran Mahotsav in South district said that there are seven locations identified by the department in South for the celebration of this festival namely Namchi, Ravangla, Jorethang, Melli, Yangang, Namthang and Temi.
Forest officials ranging from ACFs to ROs with their respective BOs and HFGs/FGs shall be overseeing activities in their allocated areas. Seedling distribution booths have been set up in different areas of the identified locations here in South, informed Mr Rai.
He further informed that approximately 41 line departments, 39 JFMCs (Joint Forest Management Committees), 12 EDCs (Eco Development Committees) and 47 Gram Panchayat Units of South District are involved in the celebration through their participation in cleanliness, plantation and awareness activities. They have also been provided with native species of seedlings/saplings of various flowering trees, flowering plants and trees like Jarul, Tanki, Payong, Panisaj, Kaijal, Pipli, Chakeesey, Teak, Aamala, Silbar, Hatti Bar, Chekrasi etc.
Mr Rai underlined that the participants will have to take complete responsibility for the successful plantation of the given saplings/seedlings in their selected areas while they will also have to frequently check on the state of the plantations in future. The Forest Department appeals to all the participants to execute the follow-up arrangement unfailingly to assist in making the Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 a success.
He also mentioned that the corporate sector in South district has come forward to participate in the festival by way of sponsorship. The participating companies are BVSR in Namchi, NHPC & RSK in Temi, DANS Energy & Micro Labs in Ravangla & Kewzing, Lanco and Sikpa in Yangang and Lingmoo, Zydus and Swiss Garnier in Phungla & Turung, Yuksom Breweries Ltd in Melli and Jindal Factory in Jorethang.
Besides participating in the cleanliness drive, these sectors will be providing logistic support with provision of vehicles for solid waste collection, garbage disposal, seedling transportation and supply of cleaning tools, disposable hand gloves and drinking water.
SBFP (Sikkim Biodiversity Forest Project) has assured to provide a sum of Rs 1 lakh each to the four territorial divisions under the Eco-Tourism Awareness Program towards the ongoing Paryavaran Mahotsav as a part of promotion of Eco-Tourism under fairs and festivals funded by JICA (Japanese International Corporation Agency), informed Mr Rai.
Elaborating on the agenda of the Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014, he further stated that the plan of action involves Sustainable Plantation, Signature Campaign, Cleanliness drive, Greenathon (Harith Daud), Rally & Eco-Competition with the observation of Ten Minutes to Earth.
The DFO (T) informed that South district is comparatively a dry region with less rainfall than the other districts for which the Forest Department has implemented numerous developmental schemes to handle the drought conditions in South district like CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) and IFMS (Intensification of Forest Management Scheme).
IFMS in particular aims at protection, conservation and control of forest eco-system while CAMPA aims to promote afforestation and regeneration activities as a way of compensating forest land diverted to non forest uses.
Paryavaran Mahotsav was announced by the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling during the 8th phase of the State Green Mission 2013 celebration at Ravangla, Tathagatha Tsal and since then Sikkim has been celebrating this Utsav from 15-30 June. It may be mentioned that Mr Chamling has taken a colossal initiative to promote and protect the environment of the state through his dynamic vision by launching unique pro-environment programs like ‘Smriti-Ban’, State Green Mission, Ten Minutes to Earth and the recent Paryavaran Mahotsav which have been implemented under his governance throughout the state of Sikkim in successful manner. Mr Chamling was also declared the Greenest Chief Minister of India (1998) by Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi.

Planning Plants at Mannan complex
GANGTOK, 23 Jun [IPR]:
As a part of Paryavaran Mahotsav, the Development Planning and North Eastern
Council Affairs Department planted 25 saplings of Rhododendron, Thuja,
Hydrangea and other flowering species at the new Secretariat [Mannan Kendra] complex
here at Development Area on 22 June.
The programme was joined by Development Commissioner N
Ethenpa, other senior officers and staff of the Planning Department, informs a

The Director of the Printing and Stationery Department along with the officials and staff of the Department also took part in the drive. Saplings like Thuga, Kasaya, Kalinga, Bauhinia and Hibiscus, etc. were planted in and around the premises of Soochna Bhawan and Printing and Stationery Department.
The plantation drive concluded with a meeting at the conference hall of the Printing and Stationery Department where the Secretary IPR said that planting one sapling is equal to giving birth to one new life.
She also extended her gratitude towards the Forest officials for organizing and assisting the plantation drive.

DAC East plants and cleans for Paryavaran Mahotsav
GANGTOK, 22 June [IPR]: The officers and
staff of District Collectorate, East celebrated Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 by
carrying out mass plantation and cleanliness drive on Saturday. Cleanliness
drive was carried out in and around the District Collectorate, Office and
different species of plants and flowers were planted in the vicinity of the
Collectorate.

Paryavaran Mahotsav at SIMFED
GANGTOK, 20 June: Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 was celebrated by
Sikkim State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (SIMFED) today.
SIMFED organised a plantation drive where 60 varieties of saplings were planted
by the officers and staff on the land belonging to SIMFED at Lumsey, Tadong,
East Sikkim, informs a press release.
On the occassion the officers and staff of SIMFED took a
pledge to keep the environment free from pollution and reduce, reuse and
recycle products in our daily lives.
The plantation was supported and supervised by the officials
of the Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, Government of
Sikkim, it is added.

Tourism celebrates Paryavaran Mahotsav
GANGTOK, 19 June: Tourism Department celebrated Paryavaran Mahotsav today at its 5th Mile, Tadong, secretariat in coordination with Forest Department. Minister, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, Ugen T. Gyatso was the chief guest on the occasion.
A press release informs that all officers and staff of Tourism Department and Special Branch of Police Department participated in a plantation drive where around 350 ornamental species were planted. Before the function began, a cleanliness drive was also conducted.

Yangang signs up for Paryavaran
GANGTOK, 15 June: The Forest, Environment and Wildlife
Department, South Sikkim under Yangang Circle, South Sikkim flagged off
Paryavaran Mahotsav with a day-long programme at Yangang Bazaar today.
Zilla Adhyaksha, South CL Gurung was present as the chief
guest on the occasion. Assistant Conservator of Forest, Ravangla, Kamal Subba,
Sub Divisonal Magistrate Yangang, PK Rai, BO Yangang, Jigdal Bhutia,
Panchayats, other forest officials, representatives of local NGOs, people of
different villages in and around Yangang, representatives of Dans Energy,
Jorethang, lANCO, Teesta HEP, SICPA, Rangpo took part in the programme.
Forest officials distributed different saplings of plants to
the villagers during the programme which was also funded Dans Energy,
Jorethang, lANCO, Teesta HEP, SICPA, Rangpo.
Speaking on the occasion, Zilla Adhyaksha, CL Gurung said that Sikkim
has achieved much success in conservation of forests and protection of green
cover in the state. However, he underlined that until we change our mentality
we cannot achieve huge success.
“Since 2006, we have planted lakhs of saplings in the state
but we have never looked back to check if these plants have survived”, he said.
He emphasized in planting more ornamental and flowering plants especially in
bazaar areas and road sides.
He also stressed on organizing quiz competitions, painting,
debate competitions among the students to raise their awareness level. He also
urged NGOs to take up mass awareness on the importance of ecology and
environment. Forest officials and panchayats also spoke on the importance of
clean and green environment and mass awareness.
The day ended with cleanliness drive at Yangang Bazaar which
was participated by all.
Paryavaran to the fore at Ravangla as well
GANGTOK, 15 June: The SDM Ravangla today
officially launched Paryavaran Mahotsav 2014 for the Sub Division at Ravangla
Bazaar. Heads of offices, Sub Divisional level government officers, employees,
Panchayats, JFMCs, EDCs, NGOs and bazaar committees as well as representatives from
Dans Co. Pvt Ltd. attended the launch, informs a press release.
According to the government direction
and notification, TB Subba [ACF Territorial Ravangla] announced the different activities
of clean and green Sikkim to be carried out by all the people of Sikkim.
It has also been made known to the
general public that mass cleanliness drive will be carried out for Ravangla Bazaar
on 18 June. All the public of Ravangla Bazaar will have to take active part in
cleaning and keeping Ravangla Bazaar Green.
Cleanliness drive will also be
carried out for every government office and residential premises, private
institutions. Greenathon and clean Sikkim will be held at Ravangla on 23 June.
The Greenathon will start from Ravangla Bazaar to Rayong Gaddi and back to
Ravangla, the release informs.
It was also announced that on 25 June
from 10.30 to 10.40 each and every person of Ravangla sub division will have to
contribute Ten Minutes to Mother Earth by planting a sapling.

conducted at Ravangla Bazaar where many people of Ravangla pledged to conserve
the earth's resources wisely.

GANGTOK, 16 June: Paryavaran Mahotsav was organised at Shri
Shri Shivalaya Mandir, Bojoghari on 15 June. The function was attended by
devotees and public of 3rd Mile Bojoghari, Tashi View Point, Takse, Mangar
Gaon, Lower Bojoghari and Sirik, informs a press release. About 100 saplings provided
by the Forest Department were planted on the day.

Fortnight-long Paryavaran Mahotsav launched
A Poster on the birds of Sikkim was released during the programme which also included the distribution of dustbins and garbage bags. Symbolizing the launch of the programme seedlings vans were flagged off by the Forest Minister followed by a ceremonial plantation.
To commemorate the event “Paryavaran Mahotsav” [from 15 to 30 June] this year various activities such as massive plantation drives, cleanliness drives, Greenathon (Run for Green and Clean Sikkim on 22 June), signature campaign, eco-competitions at schools, release of Go-Green stickers and dustbin for garbage at selected places, awareness campaigns, etc. are being organized throughout the State.
The Minister has appealed for participation of all sectors from Panchayats to local people, private entrepreneur, Government agencies, private and public sector institutions, school, colleges, NGOs, Self Help Groups, Joint Forest Management Committees, Eco Development Committees, Pokhari Sangrakshan Samities, Press, Media to render their proactive role in achieving the objectives of Paryavaran Mahotsav.
