Animal Husbandry promotes livestock and poultry farming with training programme and Calf Rally

GANGTOK, 03 Nov: Farmers training on livestock & poultry management & production along with a calf rally was organized by AH,LF&VS Department West District. The objective behind the program was to raise awareness among the people on livestock wealth development in their own farms and at the village level and to espouse it as sustainable source of income.

3,600 beneficiaries identified for Poultry Mission-II

Gangtok, 28 Aug: As of now, 3,600 beneficiaries have been identified for schemes under the Poultry Mission-II of the government. A total amount of Rs. 1 crore has been estimated for the various activities under this second phase of the Poultry Mission. 300 chicks will be provided to 600 beneficiaries, while another 3,000 beneficiaries will benefit from the Backyard Poultry scheme and distribution of month-old chicks. 25 chicks will be distributed to each identified beneficiary under this scheme. In addition to this, the government will also provide a grant-in-aid to the amount of Rs. 5.40 lakhs to the Sikkim Poultry Development Corporation.

AHLF&VS revises poultry rates for North Sikkim

MANGAN: A meeting to discuss revision of retail rates for poultry was held at the Department of AHLF&VS, Mangan, here on 11 April. The meeting was also attended by the Mangan Nagar Panchayat president, KJ Bhutia, Joint Director, AHLF&VS, poultry farmers and businessmen of the town.
The meeting was necessitated in light of the fact that while the ANLF&VS Department had fixed poultry rates in March and extended it to Mangan as well, this had not taken into consideration the transportation costs for North Sikkim.
The Joint Director briefed the meeting that he called on the Secretary with this point as well.
Taking the points raised by the poultry farmers and vendors into consideration, a resolution was passed at the meeting and the price of live chicken “at farm gate” was fixed at Rs. 110 per kg and farmers agreed to sell at this price on the condition that their poultry growers society would receive assistance from the Department in the form of subsidies on feed, chicks etc.
The retail rate for chicken in North Sikkim has been fixed at Rs. 125 per kg and rate for dressed chicken at Rs. 135 per kg. During the meeting, it was also ascertained that the daily demand for chicken in Mangan is around 400 kg per day.

Poultry profiteers rapped for fleecing consumers; Rate-board display made mandatory

GANGTOK, 22 Feb [IPR]: The Department of Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries & Veterinary Services, informs that the recent “unauthorized hike” in the rate of chicken in Gangtok and surrounding areas was brought to the notice of the Department and on 19 February, a team led by Dr. Madan KS Shanker, Dy. Director (Marketing & Quality Control), visited various meat retail shops located at Tadong, Deorali and the Non-Veg building at Kanchanjungha Shopping Complex here for verification of rate.
It was revealed that the retail shops were selling dressed chicken at the rate of Rs. 130 to 140 per Kg, the rate much higher than that fixed by the Department. The Department has already notified the rate for selling dressed chicken at the rate of Rs. 120 per Kg. It was also found that the meat stalls located in Lall Market neither displayed rate-boards nor displayed their Trade Licence.
