Two-day Army Mela organized at Bengdubi

GANGTOK, 20 Feb: A two-day Army Mela was inaugurated amidst a fly past and showering of flower petals by the helicopters at Bengdubi Mil Stn by Lt Gen K Surendranath, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC, Trishakti Corps on 18 February.
A press release informs that the Mela organized by Trishakti Corps was aimed at showcasing the military capabilities and to inculcate a sense of pride and affection in citizens towards the elite Army, which includes its serving soldiers, veterans and their families.  The event was also designed to acquaint the visitors with various facilities and amenities available with the Army and also it’s unique way of functioning besides enthralling the attendees with entertaining displays.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Lt Gen K Surendranath, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC, Trishakti Corps highlighted the numerous initiatives undertaken for the welfare of veterans and their dependents, the release mentions.  He called upon all sections of society to come forward and extend maximum support for the veterans and veer naris.
The chief guest emphasized that besides its primary role of ensuring the security of the Nation, the Armed Forces also play a key constructive role of nation building by undertaking projects for welfare of a sizeable segment of society comprising of Armed Forces Veterans, War Widows and their dependents.  He also called upon the local civil administration to strengthen the hands of the Armed Forces by ensuring a high standard of administration and facilities for the families of serving and retired soldiers.
The crowd at the sprawling grounds of Bengdubi Military Station was enthralled by the impressive display by Army Bands, the dare devilry of the Sky Divers and the training of Army Dogs, the release informs.  The display of military equipment which included tanks, guns and other weaponry witnessed an enthusiastic interest of the civilians, especially the youth.
A large number of assistance stalls related to Ex-serviceman Contributory Health Scheme, Army Welfare Housing Organisation, Army Welfare Education Society, Family Welfare Organisation, other Employment Agencies, Rajya/Zila Sainik Board, NCC and Army Recruitment Organisation were set up in the mela to assist Army Veterans and local population of states of West Bengal and Sikkim.  The mela was attended by war widows, handicapped soldiers and the Armed Forces Veterans of the states. Eight serving and retired handicapped personnel were presented modified scooters.
The Army Mela on 18-19 Feb 2012 enabled the general public, war widows and Armed Forces veterans to avail the benefits through the large number of assistance stalls established besides strengthening the bond between the local population and the Army, the release further mentions.

ARMY SETS UP DISASTER MANAGEMENT WARD AT BENGDUBI BASE HOSPITAL
 GANGTOK, 21 Sept: A disaster management ward has been activated at the armed forces Base Hospital at Bengdubi near Siliguri in West Bengal to attend to people injured in the Sunday earthquake from Sikkim. A press communiqué received from the army informs that thus far, this Base Hospital has performed five major surgeries and 9 minor surgeries.
“Till yesterday, 43 casualties and 70 tourists [including 02 foreigners and children] have been evacuated mainly from Lachung and brought safely to Mangan,” informed Lt. General Vinod Bhatia, General Officer Commanding, 33 Corps, while addressing a press conference at the District Control Room here today.

Landslide delays travel, fleecing cabbies make it worse

GANGTOK, 05 July: A landslide blocked traffic on National Highway 31A between Rangpo and Siliguri at Bhotey Bhir, around 2 km into West Bengal from Rangpo, last night. Although cleared by 7.30 a.m., the jam caused by various minor landslips, commuters insists, was because of BRO’s unfinished road widening works along the highway. Mainline vehicles took more than eight hours to reach Gangtok from Siliguri.
Apsara, a regular private bus service, which departed from Siliguri at around 7 a.m. reached the private stand here at Deorali only at around 3 p.m. On normal days, it begins its return journey to Siliguri at 1 p.m.
The tired travelers, however, were subjected to opportunist inflation on their arrival in Gangtok.

IBM “Systems Centre of Excellence” to come up in Siliguri

SILIGURI, 06 May: Surendra Institute of Engineering and Management (SIEM), Siliguri, announced on Thursday that an IBM Systems Centre of Excellence (SCoE) will be set up at the institute to train students and build “smarter skills on industry leading IBM Systems technologies and platforms”.
“The IBM SCoE, will provide an opportunity for students to learn new skill-sets on the latest technology platforms including AiX and Linux. IBM will also provide the institute with access to technologies relevant to the local market and equip the faculty with knowledge to ensure that students are able to gain first-hand experience on all IBM platforms at the college,” an SIEM press release contends.

Angaalo Yo Mayako becomes first Nepali movie to screen in a multiplex in India

SINGTAM: After a successful two-week run at Vajra Cinema Hall in Gangtok, Nepali feature film, Angaalo Yo Mayako, produced by Kishor Dungmali of Majhhitar, is ready for release at a multiplex. Mr. Dungmali informs that with AYMK’s release at Cinemax Sevin Plaza, Siliguri, on Friday, this Sikkim-made movie will become the first Nepali film to show at a multiplex in India.
Indian Idol Prashant Tamang, the lead actor of the movie, will also be present for the first show when AYMK debuts Nepali filmmaking to the multiplex circuit on Friday.
