Two-day Handicraft Fair concludes

GANGTOK, 15 May: An exhibition cum sale of traditional handicrafts ‘Handicraft Fair-2014’ was jointly organized by Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department, Government of Sikkim and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata in collaboration with Sikkim Rural Development Agency (SRDA), Government of Sikkim on 13 and 14 May, 2014 at Khangchendzonga Shopping Complex, Gangtok.

A press release informs that the inaugural function was attended by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department, Government of Sikkim, Secretary, RMDD, CEO, SRLM/RMDD, Additional Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Cultural Affairs & Heritage and officials from the concerned Departments.

A wide range of products from Handloom, Handicraft & Metallurgy were displayed by the artisans. The exhibition was held mainly to showcase traditional handicraft and also to facilitate marketing of the products.

15 Self Help Groups from all the four districts participated in the two-day exhibition. Certificates were also awarded to the artisans by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Cultural Affairs & Heritage Department. 

North East’s first handicrafts museum inaugurated

GANGTOK, 04 July: “While preserving traditional motifs on handicrafts, we should modernise the designs to appeal to the urban consumers across the country by proper finishing and branding. We should also involve National Institute of Design (NID) on a more long term and sustainable basis for increasing the income of artisans”, said Minister of DoNER, Bijoy Krishna Handique, while inaugurating the North East Craft Museum at Guwahati today, informs a DoNER release.

Kewzing entrepreneurs bag Best Stall award at NE Festival

Two youth, NT Luksom and Chewang Rinzing, both entrepreneurs from Kewzing in South Sikkim represented the State at the 2nd North East Festival held in Shillong from 07 to 09 April 2011 and put up a stall displaying handicrafts and handloom products from Sikkim. They won the “best exhibition stall” prize at the festival.
Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, not only handed over the award to the duo but also bought many of the exhibits put on display by Mr. Luksom assisted by Mr. Rinzing, which was an even bigger promotion.
The products, Mr. Luksom shares were a big hit with all the exhibits selling out in record time.
“Even the Meghalaya chief minister came and appreciated the products personally. He directed that similar training should be incorporated in his state too so that his youth can also take example from the state of Sikkim which is doing so well in the handicrafts and handlooms scenario,” Mr. Luksom shares.
