A press release informs that Justice SP Wangdi laid down the important facets of the SSLSA and its successful functioning with the state government. Speaking about the services of SSLSA, Justice Wangdi stated that its primary service is to provide legal aid. The State Legal Services Act 1987 was formulated on 09 November 1987 and Sikkim was the first state to implement the act, frame rules and regulations of the Act.
Speaking on the importance of awareness generating amongst students, Justice Wangdi stated that Legal Literacy Clubs have been extended to schools where children from an early age are made aware of their constitutional rights and laws. In connection to this the Para Legal Volunteers are trained under the State Legal Services Authority and deputed to spread social awareness. SSLSA also provides legal aid to people who cannot afford lawyers thus enabling them to a better livelihood. Justice Wangdi also enlightened the gathering about Lok Adalats and the Alternative Dispute Redressal which settles disputes in villages in the presence of the Panchayats, the release mentions.
At the end he stressed on the evils of our society and pointed out that we as individuals are responsible in making it a better place. Awareness on drug abuse, depression, counselling of children at young age, psychiatric and general counselling at schools should be made compulsory, he added. He even assured that Panel Advocates will be provided in case any school asks for it.
On the occasion, District Judge Karma Wangchuk and Sessions Judge Subarna Rai were also present.
