GANGTOK, 08 Sept: One person was killed and 5 others injured when a taxi-jeep went off the road and plunged around 60 feet down a jhora at Burtuk here.
The accident took place at around 5 pm this evening when the Bolero, SK-04-0627, lost control and slid off the road at a turning a short distance north of Vajra cinema hall. Eye-witness accounts report that the driver was attempting to overtake a taxi on the turning only to find a bus approaching from the other side.
The ill fated vehicle was heading towards Samdur from Gangtok [the daily service vehicle had barely begun its journey, starting from the Vajra parking lot], it is learnt.
Police officials confirm that when the Bolero taxi was overtaking the other taxi, it failed to account for the bus coming towards it from the other side of the road. As a result, it skidded off the bus and down into the jhora.
Harka Pandey, a 70 year of resident of Samdur, who was in the vehicle, was killed on the spot, while the other 5 occupants, including the driver, S Bhattarai, 24, also from Samdur, sustained injuries. It is reported that the driver has been taken into custody.
