PURAN TAMANGNAMCHI, 05 Sept: Dr. Subash Tamang, MO, Dentam PHC in West Sikkim, was targeted with a murderous assault by three unidentified persons while he was making the rounds of the male ward of the PHC this morning. The fact that the attackers were lying in wait and armed with rods and khukuris suggests that this was a premeditated attack.
Dr. Tamang had a providentially escape with only minor injuries. Two others, a nurse, Rajani Rai, and ward attendant, Durga Sharma, were also injured in the attack. News of the attack was met by a spontaneous condemnation by the residents of Dentam and while a group took out a protest rally, shops in the town remained shut post-noon today. The fact that Dr. Tamang is one of the government servants facing disciplinary action for his suspected participation in the Rolu Picnic of 2009, having also served a term of suspension from service, is also attracting obvious political inferences.
As per the information received, Dr. Tamang was attending to patients in the male ward and was attacked by the trio as he was exiting the ward. He, it is learnt, has suffered injuries to his back [where he was hit by a rod] and left arm [Khukuri slashes]. He however managed to evade his attackers and escape from the spot in time.
Two other persons, nurse Rajani Rai and Ward Attendant Durga Sharma, were also injured in the scuffle. The attackers fled the spot and although they remain unidentified, the registration number of the vehicle they escaped in was reportedly taken down and has been forwarded to the police.
After receiving first-aid at the same PHC, Dr. Tamang was referred to Namchi District Hospital and was taken on to Siliguri for treatment by those attending to him.
An FIR was lodged at Dentam Out-Post and a case has now been registered under Section 448, 324, 332 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code at Kaluk Police Station.
As news of the attack spread, people trooped to the PHC and their mood turned sour as word spread that despite the Gram Prasashan Kendra and the BAC office near the PHC, no officials from either office were at the site of the incident.
The group then took out a protest rally up to the area MLA’s house and raised slogans against the State Government. This group then proceeded to the Police Out-Post and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits.
Gyalshing SDPO, Devendra Arya, who arrived at the spot, assured to have the culprits nabbed by tomorrow, following which the group dispersed.
Groups of protestors also came out at nearby Kaluk, Hee Bazaar and Bermiok, and these towns shut down as well later in the day. The residence of an SDF leader was also picketed at 13th Mile Bermiok.
DC [West] Santa Pradhan and ADC Anil Prakash Rai also arrived at Dentam to check on the situation. Dr. Tamang had taken charge as MO at Dentam PHC a month and a half ago.
