SDF rallies against assault

STONE-PELTING AT SOREONG INJURES SDF SUPPORTER RETURNING FROM RALLYGANGTOK, 06 Sept: The ruling Sikkim Democratic Front took out a rally from Kaluk to Dentam today to condemn the attack on Dentam PHC MO, Dr. Subash Tamang, and also to condemn the picketing of the house used by the area MLA when she stays over at Dentam.
Meanwhile, a press release issued from the party head office here today, while condemning the attack, has demanded that the guilty be punished and proper legal action taken.
The party has criticized such acts, which it believes are attempts to vitiate the peace and tranquillity enjoyed in the State. The party has also appealed that the incident not be politicised and urged the victims to have faith in the law and order machinery to win justice for them. The SDF rally in West Sikkim was led by its district in-charge, former MLA SB Subedi, and also included the area MLA [Maneybong-Dentam], Chandra Maya Subba, and former MLA NK Subba.
IRBn personnel have been deployed in the area after yesterday’s incident to keep the situation from getting out of hand. Violence did however return to the area today with a convoy of three vehicles returning SDF supporters from the rally to their homes in Daramdin targeted with vicious stone-throwing near Soreong this evening.
The vehicles, it is learnt, were “ambushed” near Radiant Academy at Singling. 30-year-old Purna Hang Subba, an SDF supporter travelling in a vehicle [SK-04-7751] caught in the stone-throwing incident was hit on the head and has sustained grievous head injuries. He was rushed to Soreong PHC for treatment and an FIR has been lodged at the police station there.
Former SDF members now associated with the disgruntled MLA, PS Tamang, camp, have condemned the SDF rally, claiming that it was held it was held to counter the rallies taken out to protest the attack yesterday.
Former MLA Bhojraj Rai contends that this has made it the first ever rally in support of a criminal act [the attack on the Doctor].
Meanwhile, Jacob Khaling, a former Panchayat Secretary now expelled from the SDF, has claimed that the SDF rally was a move to intimidate the people.
