Orchid expert, Mohan Pradhan, to attend the 20th World Orchid Conference at Singapore

GANGTOK, 09 Nov: Orchid expert and author, Mohan Pradhan of Development Area, Gangtok is leaving for Singapore to attend the 20th World Orchid Conference scheduled to be held from 12-17 Nov, informs a press release. 
Mr. Pradhan has been invited by the Organizing Committee of the 20th World Orchid Conference to attend the opening ceremony and preview on 12 Nov and also to present a paper on the “Orchid Diversity of the Sikkim Himalayas”. He will be highlighting the unique orchid diversity of the Sikkim Himalayas and sharing his field observations and experience with the attending delegates at the Conference.
Mr. Pradhan was the ‘Orchid Scholar’, Eric Young Orchid Foundation, The Royal Horticultural Society, UK and has authored books on Orchids of the Sikkim Himalayas and North East India, briefs the release.
This is the biggest orchid show in the world and is held once every three years. More than 800 delegates from over 40 countries will be attending this conference. This time the venues in Singapore will be the multi-million dollar Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre and the billion dollars ‘Gardens by the Bay’. This new garden has been developed on land reclaimed from the sea and is the size of almost 200 football fields. The garden also houses two vast glasshouses, one of which is over three acres, the release adds. 
The release further adds that the Conference will feature both a scientific programme and the International Orchid show. Here visitors will be able to view a spectacular show of the finest orchids flown in from all around the world. In addition, the Conference will feature a market place of over 75 vendors from 20 countries.
Mr. Pradhan will also be attending a special meeting of the Orchid Specialist Group, International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Glans, Switzerland on the byline of which he is a member and Secretary of the Indian-Subcontinent Regional Group. Discussion will be held on formulation and implementation of conservation policies and strategies on in situ and ex-situ conservation, the release adds.
