Football clubs lobby for SHSC in Governor’s Gold Cup

GANGTOK, 27 Oct: Football Club Association of Sikkim [FCAS] has demanded that Sikkim Football Association invite Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club [SHSC] to play in the upcoming Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament which is set to begin in the second week of November. The FCAS board members expressed that SHSC deserves to play as the second local team in the tournament.
Two local teams are invited to play in the Governor’s Gold Cup; the winner of the Independence Day Cup and the senior division Sikkim-League champions. This year, USFC won the Sikkim-League and will be playing the Governor’s Gold Cup. Sikkim Police defeated SHSC in the Independence Day Championship finals, however, due to the All India Police Meet being held at the same time, the I-Day champs will not be playing in the tournament here.
Against this backdrop, being the runners-up of the I-Day Cup, SHSC has requested SFA to allow it to participate in the Governor’s Gold Cup.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, FCAS board member and the USFC CEO, Bhaichung Bhutia stated that SHSC deserves to play in the tournament. This, he said, would also help local talented footballers to gain exposure.
“SHSC has already written regarding the same to the SFA and the FCAS fully supports the request. The club rightly deserves to play in the absence of Sikkim Police and since there have to be at least 2 local teams in the tournament. SFA should consider SHSC’s demand”, said Bhaichung.
Likewise, the SHSC president, Tenzing Lamtha stated that with its commendable performance in all its matches, the club deserves to play in the tournament. “SHSC was unbeaten in the second division Sikkim-League and was also unbeaten till the final match of the I-Day Cup. Just by losing the final match the club cannot be termed inferior in any way”, he said.
The team is ready and all set to give its best performance in the tournament, added Mr Lamtha.
Likewise, other board members of FCAS also stressed that SHSC should be given a chance especially to encourage and promote local footballers.
