Sikkim paralegal volunteer adjudged best from Northeast at national meet

GANGTOK, 28 Oct: A national level meet of Para-Legal Volunteers was held on 26 October at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi in the presence of Justice P Sathasivam, Chief Justice of India and also Patron in-Chief, National Legal Services Authority.
The meet was organized by the National Legal Services Authority [NALSA] in coordination with Delhi Legal Services Authority to recognize the good work done by the Para-Legal Volunteers along with the work done by the District Legal Services Authorities, informs a release issued by the Additional Secretary, Sikkim State Legal Services Authority today.
Each of the 28 States and 07 Union Territories had to select one best performing para-legal volunteer and one District Legal Services Authority from their State/UTs. Passang Tshering Bhutia from Namchi, South Sikkim and DLSA [East] had been selected by the Sikkim State Legal Services Authority for Sikkim state. Out of the 35 best performing para-legal volunteers of the country, Passang Tshering Bhutia from Sikkim received the best para-legal volunteer for the North-East Zone.
The awards were divided into six categories viz. five regional [zonal] category comprising of North, South, East, West and the North-East zones and one national best. It was a proud moment for Sikkim when Passang Tshering Bhutia, 45 years old from NGO [Dristi] received the award from Justice P Sathasivam, the Chief Justice of India in the presence of Supreme Court Judges, Executive Chairpersons and Member Secretaries of all SLSAs and Judicial Officers from all over India. Justice NV Ramana, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed, Executive Chairman of Delhi Legal Services Authority were present on the dais. Passang Tshering Bhutia received the award for his contribution in disseminating information about legal aid to the needy, participating in legal awareness camps, manning Legal Aid Clinics in South district and being involved as Social Activist in the matters concerning Juvenile Justice, School dropouts, Domestic violence, HIV AIDS and Women and Children. As a Para-Legal Volunteer, amongst others, he has given counseling to the juveniles and has helped them to reform themselves from the path of rectitude, the release adds.
Executive Chairman of Sikkim SLSA, Justice SP Wangdi also a Judge High Court of Sikkim and member of the Central Authority of NALSA attended the function along with Member Secretary, Sikkim SLSA, Karma W Bhutia, the Chairperson of District Legal Services Authority [East] Meenakshi M Rai and its Secretary Suraj Chettri.
