GANGTOK, 26 June: A section of the families affected by the Sikkim
University campus land acquisition in Yangyang in South Sikkim have submitted a
memorandum to the office of the Chief Secretary requesting that they be allowed
an extension on the time within which they are to vacate the land.
This memorandum, submitted today, follows a final reminder
notice from SDM [Yangyang sub-division] served to them on 24 June to vacate the
university land within 7 days from the date of issue of the notice.
A press release by this section alleges that the government
has still not fulfilled its promises made before acquiring the land and the
people have not received the “correct” price for their land yet and are still
awaiting rehabilitation.
“We got an appointment to meet the Chief Secretary on 30
June and we hope that with the initiative of the CS the affected families will get
justice,” they state.
