GANGTOK, 26 June: 21-year-old, Pema Tshering Gurung, a
product of Spastics Society of Sikkim [SSS], Development Area, Gangtok has been
selected for the “Special Olympics - World Summer Games 2015” scheduled to be
held at Los Angeles, United States next year.
Pema was selected on the basis of his performance at the
National Championships held in New Delhi in March earlier this year.
He had made the state proud by winning the gold medal in
short put and silver medal in athletics [100 meters] in the National
Championship at Delhi. Two students of the Spastics Society had participated in
the National Championship.
Pema hails from Daramdin in South Sikkim and has been
staying at the SSS hostel since 2008.
While speaking to NOW!, Principal for Spastics Society of
Sikkim, Gangtok cum State Coach for State Olympic Bharat [SOB], Ram Prasad
Dhakal, said that students of the Spastics Society of Sikkim have been
participating in the Special Olympics World Summer Games for a while now. Every
state gets to send two entries for the Special Olympics World Summer Games
which is held biennially, he informed. This year, Pema has been selected for
the games.
“We want to provide our students the opportunity to explore their
potential through events like the Special Olympics”, said Mr Dhakal.
Mr. Dhakal will be escorting Pema to the first Preparatory
Camp to be held at Hyderabad from 04-08 September 2014. After the preparatory
camp, Pema will be attending two more camps. The last camp will be held in
Delhi from where the Special Olympics Bharat team will head towards Los
Angeles.
Sports Authority of India [SAI] will be sponsoring the
travel, accommodation, meals etc, informed Mr Dhakal.
“When Pema first came to the Spastics Society he was low on
spirit and could not spell words. Now he can study class III books and is
capable in various other fields”, he added.
Mr. Dhakal expressed gratitude towards SOB-Sikkim president cum
Chairperson, State Sikkim Child Rights Commission, Manita Pradhan for her
genuine efforts and dedication towards the SSS/SOB family. He has also thanked
the executive members of SOB and SSS for their full support and dedication.
The Special Olympics World Summer Games is scheduled to be
held from 25 July-02 August 2015. 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from
177 nations are expected to participate in the Games.
