GANGTOK, 27 June [IPR]: A workshop on Human Rights was organized
by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) at Samaj Kalyan Bhawan here today.
The workshop was conducted after monitoring and reviewing the implementation of
social schemes and governmental activities in Sikkim particularly in North
District by a special team of National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi.
Member of NHRC, SC Sinha applauded the functioning of the
state government in terms of the implementation of schemes in the states and
said that "the state is generally doing a good job, running in the front
line in the country".
Mr. Sinha suggested that strong publicity drive through the
medium of Information, Education and Communication should be initiated to
ensure public awareness on the implemented schemes and various facilities being
provided by the government.
Emphasizing on the importance of health facilities, he further
suggested some measures to be adopted for the proper benefit of the people. He complemented
the state government's initiatives on ICDS centers and further suggested the
introduction of egg as supplementary food for ICDS children and power
connectivity in the centers.
Joint Director, NHRC, Dr. Savita Bhakry highlighted on the composition,
functions and complaint handling mechanism of the commission. Human Rights are
inalienable, universal, interrelated and indivisible, she stated. Dr Bhakry
further spoke on the flagship programmes and importance of Economic, Social and
Cultural Rights.
Additional Secretary-Cum-Mission Director, ICDS, BB Subba presented
a detailed report on the activities and schemes implemented by the state and
central governments.
The programme was also attended by Additional Chief
Secretary, AK Shrivastava; Zilla Adhyaksha North, Upadhakshya South, Special
Secretary Home, Additional Secretary Health, ADC Pakyong, SDMs, representatives
from various departments, officials and members of civil society.
The programme began with the welcome speech proposed by Special
Secretary-cum-Project Director SJEWD, Januki Pradhan and vote of thanks was
delivered by Joint Secretary, Welfare Division, Dushyant Pariyar.
