SINGTAM, 20 Nov: Two persons were killed and six injured in an accident involving a government vehicle [a Maruti van of the RMDD bearing registration number SK-01G-0415] here at the PMGSY road at Nimtar, Mangthang, at “Jyanmara Bhir”.
The injured were rushed to the district hospital at Singtam and referred on to the Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok.
The two killed in the accident are 55 year old Laxman Subba and Tilak Bahadur Chettri, 31. The driver of the vehicle, Dil Bahadur Chettri, it is informed, had brought people, mostly children, from his village, Mangthang, to the swimming pool at 32 No. The accident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on the return journey when the vehicle fell down around 200 feet off the road at Jyanmara Bhir.
All the injured, save the 30 year old driver, are aged between 6 to 15 years and the condition of seven-year-old Santosh Chettri is reported to be grievous.
The accident was unfortunate enough in itself, and what further aggravated the situation was the fact that the ambulance driver was not on duty. This, incidentally, is a slackness which the residents here have suffered often. [from NANDU DUTRAJ]
