GANGTOK, 22 Nov: A case first filed as an Unnatural Death [UD] at the Gyalshing Police Station has now been converted into murder and the accused arrested by the police on 21 November. This is the second time in less than ten days that domestic violence has ended in death for a lady in Sikkim. It might be recalled that a lady had been battered to death by her husband in Gangtok on 14 November.
In the latest instance, on 21 November, Bhim Bahadur Rai of Rugathang, Namchi, filed a written complaint informing that his sister, Rupa Rai, alias Meena Rai [the deceased], had eloped with Gyan Bahadur alias Dhanu Sherpa of Rothak five years ago. For the past one year, the accused Gyan Bahadur [husband of the deceased] had been beating her up under the influence of alcohol, the complaint alleged.
Meanwhile, the autopsy carried out at the Gyalshing District Hospital revealed injuries on the face and chin of the deceased, suspected to be assault injuries while unclear ligature marks were also found on the neck. As per the opinion of the doctor the deceased had been dead for the past 3-4 days.
Accordingly, the requisition for medico-legal specialist, Singtam, was made for an in depth autopsy and is being conducted today.
On investigation, the police found the accused Gyan Bahadur [husband] missing from his house without giving any information to any of his neighbours. On 20 November, the accused was contacted on his mobile phone and informed about his wife, but after sometime he switched off his mobile and did not turn up at the police station or contact anyone.
Following this, the police put out sources, local as well as plainclothes, in and around all the suspected areas and on intensive search, the accused was rounded up from 4th Mile, Gyalshing, yesterday while he was allegedly trying to flee from the area.
Interrogation of the accused is underway and a case under section 302 [murder] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered in the Gyalshing police station.
