GANGTOK, 25 Nov: Senior vice president, Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee [SPCC], KN Upreti, has expressed disappointment over the State Government’s inability to provide land for establishing a national football academy to football star Bhaichung Bhutia.
“It is also shameful that the government of West Bengal had to provide land at Siliguri for the proposed project to the son of our soil and the former Indian Captain from Sikkim,” Mr. Upreti comments in a press release issued today.
The SDF Government showered him with praises when he was the Indian Captain and encouraged him to build talent among amateur footballers but is taking a step back when the time has come to pay him back, the release adds.
The release further alleges the government of only offering ‘lip service’, encouraging local youth and shattering their dreams if they do not see their ‘personal interest’.
