GANGTOK, 15 Dec: As per information received from Chief Engineer SS Porwal of Project Swastik, the high speed winds which lashed Gangtok on the intervening night of 14 and 15 December, caused extensive damage at the Project Swastik campus here at Burtuk and moderate damage to 758 BRTF /129 RCC of BRO.
The windstorm blew away corrugated sheets off many roofs and as they whipped about in the air, coming out of homes became dangerous. Hundreds of such sheets were blowing around in the campus, the CE informs.
A number of tress were uprooted and fell on buildings and electricity lines, with the damage so severe that the entire line will have to be laid afresh, the officer informs.
The officers mess building was devastated as the entire roof was blown away and several other houses in the camp were damaged by falling trees. CGI sheets were blown off the Chief Engineer’s office as well, along with the langar, NCO mess and living barracks.
The Project Swastik Chief Engineer inspected the campus and all available manpower was pressed into clearing the area on a war-footing. Chief Engineer promptly got in touch with State and army authorities and despatched parties to check the road sate in and around Gangtok, an official release further informs.
