Gangtok, 15 Dec [IPR]: An emergency meeting was convened at the conference hall of Police Head Quarters here this morning to take the stock of the situation arising from the high velocity winds which hit parts of East and North Sikkim, including Gangtok.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary R. Ongmu and was attended by the Director General of Police, Secretaries of Roads & Bridges, PHE, IPR, Special PCCF, Commissioner, GMC, Special Secretary, LR&DMD, District Collector and Superintendent of Police, East, and the officers from line departments and took stock of the situation arising out of the wind and storm, and the actions taken to restore normalcy.
During the meeting the Chief Secretary took detailed report from all the concerned departments like Power, PHE, Health, Forest, GMC, PWD and directed them to start the restoration work immediately.
Immediately after the incident, the state administration swung into action and the District Collector visited the damaged site and the STNM Hospital, and have assured victims that all necessary assistance will be provided by the state Government as per norms.
The district administration also declared an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 1.5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased child [killed when an uprooted tree collapsed on her house last night]. The State Disaster Response Force along with officials of the Police and Forest Department immediately took action to evacuate the people from the affected area and cleared the road from the early morning.
The state administration has assured that due the timely intervention of the state administration, normalcy has been restored. The State administration has further appealed to the public that everything is under control and there is no need for the panic. The District Control Room is functional 24 X 7 and any incident may be reported to the control room in the number 03592-204995, 9434041007 and 8900527997.
