GANGTOK, 20 Dec: The Animal Husbandry Department organized a Banpala Ram Show along with sale of Sheep Wool products and weaving demonstration at Dentam, West Sikkim on 16 December. The programme was attended by the area MLA, Chairperson STCS, Chandra Maya Subba as chief guest.
A press release informs that during the Banpala Ram show, more than 30 rams were judged by a panel of veterinarians and awarded. There were also more than 60 sheep put on display during the programme.
A stall of sheep products and exhibition stalls of the department of AH, LF&VS, Alpine Cheese and rearing demonstration of sheep wool was also done on the day. A colorful cultural programme related to sheep migration in the hills during the grazing season was demonstrated through ‘Tunga Music’ by the Gurung community as sheep are mainly reared by Gurungs throughout Sikkim, it is mentioned.
Earlier, the programme started with the welcome address by Additional Director [West], Dr. NB Chettri, who highlighted the aims and objectives of organizing the Banpala Ram Show.
The area MLA, in her address, stressed on the need to conserve Banpala Sheep and strengthen the only sheep farm located at Begha as a demonstration farm.
Director (AH) also shared his views regarding the need to protect the Banpala sheep in Sikkim.
Former MLA, Deepak Gurung, senior dignitaries, Director (AH) along with Additional Director, Dr.NT Bhutia and Joint Director, Dr.TP Lama were also present along with District Officials.
