Chamling reiterates commitment to protect and support all communities and faiths
GYALSHING, 17 Dec: Teyongsi Sirijunga Sawan Tongnam was celebrated here at Martam’s Srijunga Mangkhim with Chief Minister Pawan Chamling as the chief guest. The festival celebrates the birth anniversary of Limboo revivalists Teyongsi Sirijonga. Today was his 310th birth anniversary.
Addressing the occasion, the Chief Minister reiterated that his government has consistently worked towards the protection and nurture of all communities and faiths in the State. “This idealism has ensured that today, such diverse festivals and occasions are celebrated in Sikkim,” the CM highlighted. Teyongsi Sirijunga Sawan Tongnam was included as a State Holiday under the SDF Government as have many other festivals of other communities.
The CM stressed that he believed that protection and celebration of the unique aspects of different communities reinforced unity unlike what his detractors are wont to say about such recognition leading to fragmentation of the society. Confident communities are more at ease with each other and live in harmony as against communities which are denied free expression of their individuality, he said.
“It is only with the advent of the SDF Government that Mangkhim, Mandirs, Churches, Gumpas etc are being constructed in such numbers in Sikkim and individual communities and faiths are prospering so well,” he said.
“Sikkim is the land of the Gods and the responsibility to maintain its sanctity is shouldered on every Sikkimese. We cannot shirk this responsibility,” he said, while calling on the people to promote brotherhood instead of falling prey to divisive politics and support development instead of opposing progress.
He pointed out that the Srijunga statue project commissioned by the present government was a first such initiative for the Limboo community in Sikkim or anywhere else and added that when this project is completed, it will join the projects which have already added to Sikkim’s appeal as a pilgrimage destination.
Commenting on the seat reservation for Limboo and Tamang communities in the legislative Assembly, he mentioned that this was to be granted by the Central Government and was being pursued there by the State. As for all rights within the purview of the State Government to accord, these have already been done for the two communities, he added.
Also today, various personalities of the Limboo community were felicitated for their contributions towards the literary, cultural and social progress of the community. Felicitated today Limboo language authority BB Muringla and Victoria Cross RB Limboo [from Nepal].
The Limboo calendar and souvenir were also released today along with an anthology of poems compiled by the local Limboo community.
