NAMCHI, 15 Nov: The Muslim community of Namchi observed Muharram here at Namchi bazaar today. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and begins with mourning of the death of Imam Hussein Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad.
Muharram is a day of remembrance, especially for Shias, as they mourn the death of Imam Hussein Ali. Muslims flagellate themselves on this day, reminding themselves of the sufferings the Imam went through. Some of the popular traditions are that people re-enact the battle of Karbala to spread awareness about his sacrifice.
