GANGTOK, 14 Nov: Tata Football Academy has become the first team to secure a berth in the semifinal round of the ongoing All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2013 here at Paljor Stadium. In the first quarter-final match played today, TFA beat Mumbai Tigers in a tie-breaker.
Mumbai Tigers, led by local lad Bikash Jairu as captain, was placed directly in the quarter-finals while TFA reached the quarter-final after beating NISA-Manipur in the pre quarterfinal match.
Both teams fought neck-to-neck right from the start but the match ended in a goalless draw. The match then entered into the tie-breaker through penalty shoot-outs. In the tie-breaker, TFA managed to net 5 goals while Mumbai Tigers scored 4.
Today’s match was also witnessed by the Governor Shriniwas Patil and his wife Mrs. Rajani Devi Patil.
On Friday, the second quarter-final match will be played between Manang Marshyangdi Club of Nepal and Royal Wahingdoh FC Shillong at 2 PM.
An exhibition match for U-14 girls on 20-10-20 minutes format was also played today to mark the occasion of Children’s Day. The match was played between Modern Secondary School and Deorali Girls’ Senior Secondary School, in which the former defeated the latter by 1-0.
Raj Bhavan presented the winners of the match with Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 to the runners-up.
Today, the lucky draw of the second round mini-season tickets was held and announced by the Governor’s wife, Rajani Devi Patil. This time the prize went to ticket no 208 of Hill side.
