GANGTOK, 27 Jan: Two of the accused persons in the assault on Avinash Yakha a few days ago has been arrested. After a hunt of almost a week, the Temi police tracked down Sangay Lama, 40, here at Gangtok at his residence yesterday and today, another accused, Ramesh Subba, was also traced down to Gangtok and taken into custody. Both arrests were affected by a Temi Police Station team led by SI Bimal Gurung, it is informed.
Sangay Lama was arrested late in the evening, at around 6 pm on 26 January, from his residence in DPH area here. He, along with others, including prime accused, Roshan Pradhan, have been booked under section 307 IPC which deals with attempt to murder. Mr. Pradhan remains untraced.
All accused are SKM party workers and had reportedly attacked Avinash Yakha, an SDF member, at Temi on 22 January. Subsequent to the attack, Mr. Yakha was admitted at the Central Referral Hospital, Tadong.
In another case, also occurring on 22 January, this one relating to the incident at Bermiok, West Sikkim, a total of 8 SKM supporters have been arrested till now. This incident relates to the stone pelting and rioting incident purportedly by the SKM workers on SDF party workers while the latter were engaged in their CLC meeting at Bermiok under Kaluk police station, West Sikkim. Two accused had been arrested earlier.
On 25 January the Kaluk police apprehended another 6 of the accused namely, BB Subba of Legship, Phurden Lepcha of Kaurang, Ram Kumar Chettri of Barfok, Buddha Maya Bandari, Jeewan Kumar Chettri of Martam and Tika Hang Subba of Sombaria. The vehicle used by the main accused, Roshan Pradhan, a Bolero, has also been seized. In this case too, the main accused is Roshan Pradhan, who is absconding.
