GANGTOK, 30 Jan: Teesta-V Power Station in association with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Govt. of Sikkim is organizing a football tournament at NHPC Ground, Balutar. The tournament was inaugurated today by the chief guest, Temi-Namphing MLA, BS Panth.
A press release informs that the tournament is being organized in order to promote rural sports and encourage budding young talent. The opening ceremony was witnessed by various Panchayat members, Official of Sports & Youth Affairs, Govt. of Sikkim along with senior officers of NHPC and large number of locals who came to enjoy the tournament.
The tournament began with the welcome speech of General Manager, Teesta-V Power Station, AB Saha, wherein he reiterated NHPC’s commitment towards community development along with generation of green and clean power. He also thanked the state government for its continuous support.
The chief guest, BS Panth in his inaugural speech appreciated the work done by NHPC for the upliftment of the local community. He wished all the participating teams good luck.
The inaugural match of the tournament was played between the teams of Evershine Club, Dipudara and UKFA, Upper Khani. UKFA won the match by 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out.
The release informs that 16 football teams of the state are participating in the ongoing tournament. The winner of the tournament will be awarded with cash prize of Rs. 30,000 and a trophy, while Rs. 20,000 and a trophy will be given to the runner-up team. The final match of the tournament will be played on 13 February.
