GANGTOK, 30 Sept: A team of four members of Yuldri Sum Association, led by Thukchuk Lachungpa, visited Lachung, Lachen and Chungthang on 27 September to check on the ground reality of the area devastated by the 18 September earthquake. They also took a 14 kilometer walk of Lachung and are planning to visit Dzongu in their next trip.
Speaking to media persons today, Mr. Lachungpa informed that the need of the hour at these places was of counselling as people were still scared and unnerved by the earthquake. Relief materials, he said, should be as per the requirement list such as clothes, tarpualin, candles and above all doctors to check on and treat the injured people. There is no need for rescue teams anymore as most of the work has already been done by the army and the locals, he added.
“There was not much damage caused by the earthquake, but most of the damages occurred due to the landslides which were triggered by the earthquake in Lachung and Lachen,” he said and added that road connectivity needs to be worked upon as most villages are still cut off from each other.
“The army has done a very commendable job. Along with the Army and Pawan Hans Helicopters, the work done by the State government and non governmental organisations are worth being appreciated, he stated.
Mr. Lachungpa cast doubts on the efficacy of the repair work being undertaken by the BSNL and BRO to restore telecom and road connectivity beyond Chungthang. With only Chungthang serviced by the telecom network [WLL], GREF was working with barely 17 labourers and minimal equipment on the severely damaged Toong-Chungthang axis.
He also stated that one person was still missing in Lachung and the family was trying to do everything to find or locate his body.
