SU relief teams fan out in affected areas


GANGTOK, 25 Sept: Two relief teams of Sikkim University reached earthquake affected areas in East and North Sikkim today, carrying out a recce of requirements in these areas and also reaching relief aid.
One team reached Sankalang last evening and dropped rations and camped there.
This morning, the team hiked to Upper Burfok and then on to Toong and Rungrung in the Upper Dzongu region, it is informed.
At Toong and Rungrung, people are still not returning to their homes at night. They visit it only during the daylight to eat and they work outside, the team found.

According to the team, no one has reached Rungrung village as yet.
People have constructed camps where they are sleeping at nights. They are scared as the buildings have cracks in them and boulders are still falling. Medicines were given out by the team and air-dropping of rice has helped. People plan to raze their houses and construct them on higher ground for which they need Tarpualins immediately, the team reports.
There are cases of Diarrhoea for which medicines are needed urgently, as are blankets.
As per their information, the worst affected area is the village of Bring-Katam, which is cut off from all sides. Messages have been sent to chopper services as essentials are needed there.  
Meanwhile, the other team was in the Upper Nandok area of East Sikkim where irreparable damage has been suffered to property and livestock.
A team also visited Kamarey in Eastern Pendam area and Raley in Samdur Kamel area in East District and distributed relief materials to the affected victims.
The relief work is being carried out on the basis of a quick need-based assessment by the university regarding the needs of the affected families, the release informs.
The initiative on the part of Sikkim University is to also to interact with the affected victims and get first-hand experience of the damage caused by the quake. This findings, the release further informs, will feed into various disaster management intervention and studies that the varsity plans to take up in the state and the region on a long term basis.
