GANGTOK, 30 Sept: The Bar Association of Sikkim (BAS) formed “The 18th September 2011 Earthquake Victims Relief Fund” in order to reach out to all the people willing to aid the victims and generate both monetary as well as material support after obtaining necessary permission from the District Collector, Gangtok, informs a press release issued by General Secretary, BAS.
The business community and general public from all walks of life in and around Gangrok i.e., Development Area, M.G. Marg, Lall Bazar, Deorali, Tadong, 6th Mile, Ranipool spontaneously came forward to lend a helping hand in this mission undertaken by the BAS and generously contributed (cash and kind) towards the fund organised by BAS.
On 21 Sept a small team of BAS members headed straight to ground zero (North Sikkim) to get firsthand knowledge and provide immediate relief to the needy, the release informs.
After reaching Lingzya in upper Dzongu, North Sikkim at around 7 p.m., they called a meeting, set up a committee, turned the Panchyat House into a relief camp and distributed relief material and medicines.
Another team visited Tanilakha village, Tokchi Gumpa, Khumrang and Nindi located in and around Pakyong to take stock of the situation there.
The BAS teams, since the earthquake have also visited Sokpay and Kow in South Sikkim, Nandok, Bhusuk, Lumsay, Kopibari, Palzor Stadium, Yelli, Sang-Martam, STNM and Manipal Hospitals and all Helipads in East Sikkim and distributed relief materials to the affected people, the release adds.
BAS has also sent relief materials to Lachung, Chungthang, Dzongu and Mangan in North Sikkim, Samdong, Luing Thamidara and JN Road, Ray-Lingdum in East Sikkim, Tashiding, Yuksom, Hee-Tamabong, Daramdin in West Sikkim and Yangang in South Sikkim.
The BAS has also tied up with Helping Hands, an umbrella organisation consisting of most of the NGOs in Sikkim, for transportation and distribution of relief materials.
“We hereby confirm that all the relief materials have reached its destination,” the release states.
The BAS has thanked each and every individual who came forward with an open heart and supported the mission.
The release also informs that a detailed list of major donors along with utilisation till date has also been provided and leaflets for this purpose are also in circulation, once it is completed/received by BAS, the names of donors will be updated accordingly.
