GANGTOK, 24 Sept: The United Christian Welfare Society, Sikkim, [UCWSS] has appealed to church leaders to keep their congregations updated with correct information and maintain calm and perseverance in the face of the devastation caused by the 18 September earthquake in Sikkim. The organization has called on its members to cooperate with the district administration in relief and rehabilitation efforts. On its contributions towards the rebuilding efforts, the organization has resolved to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and has also submitted details with Blood Bank authorities of UCWSS members ready to donate blood as and when required.
These were decided at meetings of the organization held in Gangtok and Namchi over the past two days, informs a press release issued by the UCWSS general secretary Renzino Lepcha.
UCWSS members have also been advised to organize prayer meetings and mass prayer services for the affected people.
In Gangtok, a Mass is scheduled for 26 September [3 p.m. onwards].
Meanwhile, the members of the organization are actively engaged in relief work in Mangan and coordinating with Development Agencies Coordinated Action (DACA).
Recognising the water supply disruptions in Gangtok, the organization has organized utility vans to carry out water distribution till normalcy is restored.
Visits have also been made to educational institutions to assess the damage and provide moral and institutional support to overcome the fear and loss, the release informs.
