Sikh youth from Siliguri drive in relief materials


GANGTOK, 24 Sept: The Sikh Sangat [youth] of Siliguri, West Bengal, registering soladarity with victims of the 18 September earthquake, today brought in five jeep-loads of relief materials and food items to be sent up to North Sikkim.
“We are here to provide all the help that the State Government requires from us and will be providing further relief and other necessary materials as and when needed”, informed Sarvajit Singh, president, Sikh Youth Forum of Siliguri, while speaking to NOW! at the Libing Helipad here today.

“After the earthquake hit Sikkim, we started to hear about the devastation that had been caused in North Sikkim and also how the area was inaccessiable and that the Gurudwara Sahib at Chungthang was providing food and shelter to the people. Our elders in Siliguri got together and decided that as good work was being done at Gurudwara Sahib the work of providing food and shelter to the victims should not stopped. So they collected funds and made the necessary purchases of the relief materials which will be needed in the day to day functioning of the Gurudwara at Chungthang, Mr. Singh said.
He further stated that another set of three truck-loads of relief materials and food items had been despatched from New Delhi and will be arriving in Siliguri in a day or two and next week the 16-member team that brought the relief materials today were planning to go atleast upto Mangan to handover the relief materials.
The relief materials and food items have been handed over to the people from Inter-Agency Response Group [IARG] and is at their disposal to be used on need basis. They have also informed that most of the material will be sent to Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung, where it is required the most.
“We are very thankful to the people of Sikkim, the Army, the Superientendent of Police [East] Dr. MS Tuli and the proprieter of Apna Dhaba, Jagjit Singh for helping us in this endevour”, said footballer Manjeet Singh.
