GANGTOK, 27 Sept: With weather clearing up and holding for the day, army helicopters flew numerous sorties in North Sikkim on Tuesday. The choppers airdropped copious amounts of ration and other essential commodities and also evacuated several people from different places. Twelve army helicopters moved 9,408 kgs of supplies along with special equipment like generators, personnel and evacuating 206 stranded people from North Sikkim.
Col Ravi Patil informs that 2,550 kgs of relief packages were dropped at different locations in Dzongu- 360 kg at Sakyong, 450 kg at Pentong, 150 kg at Saffo, 650 kg at Breng, 890 kg at Gyathang and 250 kg at Kateng.
He further informed that 530 kg of ration from the State administration [for civilians] was also dropped at Thangu where no supplies had been reached thus far.
An army supply helicopter also landed at Lachen for the first time and dropped off 400 kg of rations from Gangtok and reached 2,400 kg of ration from the army camp at Chaten to Lachen. It was also informed that 1,500 kg of ration and 2,000 kg of ration and medicines were also dropped off at Lachung today.
On the way back, the helicopters evacuated 15 persons from Sakyong, 68 from Chungthang, 8 from Breng and 4 each from Lachen and Lachung to Mangan today. The choppers also evacuated 71 persons from Lachung, 3 from Lachen and 32 from Chungthang to Gangtok.
Meanwhile, a six-member Red Cross team with water purifiers was dropped at Chungthang from Gangtok and a six-member team of scientists, seismologists and structural engineers were reached to Lachung from Gangtok along with 2 doctors.
It was informed that numerous sorties were also flown by Pawan Hans to North Sikkim and 80% of stranded people [wishing to leave] were evacuated from Chungthang. 39 persons from Chungthang were flown to Gangtok and 69 to Mangan.
Also today, a dead body was recovered from Shipgyer today and was later identified as S Ranjannath of Kolkata employed with Abir Infrastructure. The deceased was reported missing since the night of the earthquake.
