WATER PURIFYING UNIT ISTALLED AT CHUNGTHANG
GANGTOK, 30 Sept: The Indian Red Cross Society [IRCS], Sikkim Branch, has been assisting the state authorities in the earthquake-hit areas by contributing relief materials in North, East and South districts despite the unfavorable weather, a press release informs.
The IRCS state branch general secretary, BK Roka, informs that on the 25 September, two teams visited Linzya, Bey and Mangan in North Sikkim and delivered relief items and on the 26 September, relief items reached Namthang and Borong in South Sikkim.
To address the possibility of outbreak water borne diseases in the aftermath of the earthquake, a high value drinking water purification unit [capable of purifying 40,000 liters per day], despatched from the IRCS Headquarter was airlifted to Chungthang on 27 September, the release adds.
This purifier was accompanied by IRCS technicians who installed the machine at Chungthang and trained the local state representative. The purifier will be under the charge of the Chungthang BDO office.
An IRCS team also visited Rongli and handed over relief items there and at Lingtam through Panchayat Secretary. This consignment comprised of 75 blankets, 1 bundle of tarpaulin sheets and 10 cooking stoves. Another team visited Lumsey area below Gangtok and distributed 150 blankets, 2 bundles of tarpaulin sheets and 10 cooking stoves for the earthquake victims of Lumsey, Tadong and Daragaon liing in the relief camp there.
The release adds that two experts from the National Headquarter Family News Service have been deployed at Chungthang and Mangan to help the earthquake affected families. They have reached relief assistance to over 80 families, covering around 350 people, thus far, the release informs.
