GANGTOK, 28 Sept: The two Pawan Hans helicopters have been buzzing in frenetic activity on relief and rescue operations, running 22 sorties on Wednesday alone.
The State government spokesperson, IPR Secretary, KS Topgay, informed that the two Pawan Hans choppers flew these 22 sorties from Mangan to Chungthang and on to Lachen and Lachung today.
These helicopters ferried 72 persons, including 25 students, to Lachen and Lachung from Mangan today. This group was obviously concerned about the situation at home.
Mr. Topgay explained that these flights were undertaken on a humanitarian ground so that students from Lachen and Lachung studying outside could return home and meet their parents. Schools across Sikkim, it may be recalled, have been closed in the wake of the earthquake and scheduled to reopen after the Dasain holidays on 10 October.
The larger army helicopters kept busy airlifting essential supplies and relief materials to the affected areas, especially to Lachung and Chungthang.
On way back, these helicopters have brought back 81 stranded people to Gangtok - 49 from Lachung, 30 from Chungthang and 02 from Mangan.
Similarly, the army helicopters brought back 82 stranded persons to Mangan from different locations- 25 from Lachung, 13 from Chaten, 29 from Chungthang, 05 from Sakyong, 02 from Saffo, 03 from Lingdem and 01 from Pentong.
Meanwhile, it is further informed that three medical camps have been set up at Lingzya, Manul and Sangkhalang which attended to 172 patients today.
