GANGTOK, 30 Sept: In order to address the problems of the affected people of Gangtok overlooked in earlier inspections, the Sub Divisional Magistrate [East], Dr. AB Karki took a tour of 6th Mile, 5th Mile, Tadong, Swastik and Nam Nang, today.
Of the buildings he visited in these areas, two buildings in Swastik and one at Nam Nang had suffered major damages and the report of this will be submitted to the District Collector [East], he informed.
The house of Lakhmit Bhutia was in danger due to the instability of a four storied building of Pema Gyatso Kazi at Nam Nang. The area is situated near the meat shops of Lall Bazaar and is in need of immediate attention, he said and added that the two buildings at Swastik were also in danger as there was water seepage in one and a huge boulder at the CMP complex was posing a threat to the other. The houses belong to Nima Lama and Tshokpa Bhutia.
All the above mentioned houses will be inspected by engineers as soon as possible and appropriate action will be taken on the report of the team, he informed.
He has also directed the GREF to look into the drainage system running above the house at Swastik and also check on the huge boulder and whether it needs to be broken as the area above the boulder have also developed huge cracks and could pose threat to the people residing in the building below. He has asked GREF officials to submit a report in a day or two.
Today, the SDM [East] also visited the 36 relief camps in the East District being run under the direct supervision of the DC [East].
He also conveyed DC [East]’s appeal to the people who have been not been attended to thus far to come forward and meet the district officials or the officials who are in the field so that immediate relief and rehabilitation is provided to them.
