GANGTOK, 26 Sept: The ruling SDF party has accused the opposition parties of exploiting the trauma of a natural disaster to further their political agendas by issuing misinformed and intentionally falsified comments on the relief and rescue works.
“It is a shame that the opposition should exploit the psychological trauma of the people as a weapon to gain political ground when the state has not even fully recovered from the tragedy,” rues an SDF press release issued by the party general secretary, publicity, TN Sharma today.
The party has further accused opposition leaders of not displaying any empathy towards the affected people whom they are approaching with vested interests instead of consolation.
The release highlights that the there is no road access to the affected areas of Chungthang Dzongu, Lachen and Lachung and that the State government was trying to arrange more helicopters for the rescue works. The Opposition, instead of assisting such efforts, was trying to hide even genuine efforts while spreading untruths and sowing resentment among people who need consolation and reassurance, the release adds.
The release insists that all the MLAs have been visiting their respective constituencies and taking account of the affected people while the Chief Minister during the past 8 days toured all the districts and delivered relief directly to the affected people, extending consolations and comforting them.
“It is disturbing that at a time when the state has suffered such extensive damage, the Opposition still finds ways to demoralize the spirit of those making an effort to restore normalcy to the state,” the release states.
The release further accuses the Opposition of trying to promote an anti-development agenda by suggesting that hydel projects and industrial units were to blame for the earthquake.
