GANGTOK, 30 Oct: Agriculture Technology Management Agency [ATMA], West Sikkim organized an exposure visit and training of 50 progressive farmers at ICAR research complex, Gangtok on 24 October, informs a press release.A group of farmers from Middle Gyalshing, Toyang, Lower Chumbung and Bhaluthang led by Programme Assistant of KVK, Bhanu Chettri visited ICAR research farm and interacted with the scientists.
According to the release, the performance of upland direct seeded rice varieties was demonstrated at the research farm by Dr. Chandan Kapoor. The total package of practice taken up for growing the Bhalum series of upland rice was explained and various problems related to rice cultivation were discussed.
The farmers visited the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) plot and also saw for themselves, the performance of Attay (local rice variety) under the system. The cultivation techniques of the horticultural crops like kiwi fruit, orange and ginger was also shown and explained to farmers by Dr. Ashok Kumar, the release adds.
Dr. Subash Babu, taught the farmers weed management in crops. Later the farmers assembled at SAMETI hall and were addressed by Director SAMETI, SL Dorjee. Giving due importance to Rabi crops and organic farming, she suggested the farmers to take help from ATMA and SAMETI, the release further adds.
