For improved transportation in hilly regions

GANGTOK, 02 Nov: To deliberate on different issues related to urban transport in hill towns, a workshop on Mobility Issues of Hilly Towns began here today. The three-day workshop is being organised by the Institute of Urban Transport [IUT] and sponsored under the UNDP-GEF supported Sustainable Urban Transport Project.
The main objective of the workshop is to discuss and deliberate the implication of neglecting the urban transport. The other objective of the workshop is to sensitize the concerned authorities about the public transport in the urban areas along with its problems and solutions.
In his inaugural address, Transport Department Principal Chief Engineer, LM Pradhan, mentioned that as the airway and railway are yet to be completed in the state the state depends solely upon its inter and intra road connecitivities. On the same, he added that such type of workshop would be beneficial for the state.
He urged the participants for more deliberation and discussion in the workshop to make it fruitful and useful. He also mentioned about the various activities and services of the SNT and Transport Department in the state.
IUT Director General, BI Singal talked about the various activities and mission of the Institute of Urban Transport.
Speaking on the workshop, he informed that the workshop would discuss on various factors and issues concerned with urban transport which were being neglected; there would also beh case studies of improved hill transportation. He urged the participants and resource persons to make the workshop interactive.
Advisor IUT, KS Saha informed that four such workshops had already been conducted with a few more to be conducted in other areas.
The workshop has experts and resource persons from EMBARD, TERI, IDFC, Living Edge and from Sikkim. The workshop is being attended by delegates from Manipur, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Sikkim.
The workshop is schuduled to cover various subjects like urban transport and its role in city life and hill towns, international best practices in mobility for hill towns, case sudies of Shimla and Medellin, mobility issues for hill towns- Sikkim case study and others. The workshop will conclude on 04 November.
