NAMCHI, 31 Oct: South District Police achieved a breakthrough in the murder case of 53 years old Balbir Gurung of Lower Karek in South Sikkim with the arrest of the absconding culprit. SDPO Namchi, Gigee Norbu today informed that the alleged culprit, 17 years old Om Nath Chettri hailing from the same village had been absconding after he had murdered the aged man on 26 October 2011.
The case was registered under Section 302 of IPC at Namchi Police Station and the police had been searching for the culprit. On 28 October the police arrested him while he was trying to escape through Samardung Mamring wooden bridge. The SDPO further informed that his parents were originally from Nepal but were here since the past many years and the accused Om Nath was born here in Sikkim itself.
After the incident he was trying to flee the state when he was caught by Namchi Police after which he was brought to Namtghang OP; from here he was escorted to Namchi PS. He was placed before CJM, South and West at Namchi who sent him to the Juvenile Home at Gangtok. It was also informed that the accused had taken the police to the spot where he narrated the crime. As per his statements Police also recovered the stone and Iron rod, weapons used to murder the victim Bal Bir Gurung.
