GANGTOK, 24 Oct: The State Government is hopeful that a good part of the demand for supplementary assistance sought from the Central government under the Natural Calamity Contingency Fund will be released by the Central government within the next few days.
Officials inform that the state is optimistic that a good percentage of the assistance sought for immediate restoration and rehabilitation measures ,which has been pegged at Rs. 2,811.99 crore, will be released soon.
However, it is also likely that this will be finalized and released once the central team which is again on a damage assessment tour of the State has completed its tour of the affected areas and come to a conclusion regarding the estimate projected for immediate restoration and rehabilitation.
State government officials inform that they have not been contacted by the visiting Central team yet. In fact, officials opine that this Central team is here to verify the claims made by the State government in its memorandum of Rs. 2,811.99 crore submitted to the centre for immediate restoration works. In such a case, once the Central team has completed its tour and assessment, a meeting will be held with State government officials to decide on the amount to be released. It may be added here that the central team is conducting its own independent survey and assessment of the earthquake affected areas.
